Athletics' Michel Otanez: Records first win Tuesday
Otanez (1-0) recorded the win over the Reds on Tuesday, firing two-thirds scoreless innings and recording a strikeout.
Otanez inherited a two-on, one-out scenario from starter Mitch Spence in the sixth inning, but he prevented any damage by inducing a foul pop and strikeout from the two batters he faced. The rookie right-hander then became the pitcher of record when Oakland mounted a four-run rally in the seventh and managed to hold on for the victory. Otanez's first big-league win came on the heels of a rough outing against the Brewers on Sunday, when he allowed three runs over 1.1 innings, and he now has scoreless appearances in five of his last seven trips to the mound.

Athletics' Michel Otanez: Earns first career save
Otanez allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three over a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Giants.
Mason Miller and Tyler Ferguson were presumably unavailable after heavy workloads in the Athletics' last game Thursday. Otanez was a little fresher, and while it took him 26 pitches (17 strikes) to get the job done, he was able to secure his first major-league save in just his 18th appearance. Otanez has allowed two runs with a 13:1 K:BB over eight innings in August, and he's now at a 3.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB through 18 innings overall. He's added just one hold this year, so it's unlikely that he'll feature regularly in high-leverage situations.

Athletics' Michel Otanez: Dealing with forearm bruise
Otanez, who was removed from the Athletics' 11-5 loss to the Phillies on Saturday after taking a line drive off his pitching arm in the eighth inning, is dealing with a forearm bruise in the aftermath, the Associated Press reports.
The right-handed reliever had just been recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day due to Luis Medina's (elbow) placement on the injured list. Otanez's injury is muscular in nature, according to manager Mark Kotsay. Otanez isn't likely to be used in Sunday's series finale in Philadelphia but should be ready to go coming out of the All-Star break.

Athletics' Michel Otanez: Signs minors deal with Oakland
Otanez signed a minor-league contract with the Athletics on Dec. 9.
Otanez was said to have inked a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks in November with an invite to spring training as part of that pact, but evidently that deal fell through. It does not appear he has been invited to Oakland's major-league camp this spring. The 26-year-old posted a 6.08 ERA and 61:28 K:BB over 37 innings between the Double- and Triple-A levels in 2023.
