  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Blasts key home run Wednesday

Sweeney went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Rockies.

Sweeney capped off a six-run first inning with a three-run shot, his fourth home run in 21 games since making his MLB debut on Aug. 16. The 24-year-old has some offensive upside, and with Javier Baez (hip) out for the season, Sweeney is getting an extended look at shortstop. Baez has struggled since coming over to Detroit and will be 32 when the 2025 season gets underway, so Sweeney could take the job and run with it, though Baez is still owed $73 million through 2027, which could complicate the situation.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Fills box score in win

Sweeney went 4-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional RBI, a walk, one stolen base and two total runs scored in Sunday's 9-1 win over the Athletics.

Sweeney did a little bit of everything in the best game of his young major-league career. He opened the scoring with a third-inning solo shot and added an RBI single in the fourth. This was the second multi-hit effort in 19 games in the majors for the shortstop. He's now batting .236 with three homers, nine RBI, five runs scored, two steals and two doubles over 58 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Idle versus southpaw

Sweeney isn't in Detroit's lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.

With southpaw Brady Basso set to take the mound for the A's, the lefty-hitting Sweeney will step out of the starting nine Saturday. In his place, Zach McKinstry will pick up a start at shortstop and bat seventh.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Resting versus lefty

Sweeney is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Padres.

Sweeney had started in 10 consecutive games, all against right-handed pitchers, but he will get some rest with lefty Martin Perez on the mound for the Padres. At shortstop Thursday, Ryan Kreidler is starting and batting eighth.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Resting against lefty

Sweeney isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Saturday's game against the White Sox.

With lefty Ky Bush set to toe the slab for Chicago, the lefty-hitting Sweeney will step out of the starting nine Saturday. While he rests, Ryan Kreidler will start at shortstop and bat ninth.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Getting afternoon off

Sweeney is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

With a lefty (Justin Steele) on the hill for the Cubs, the lefty-hitting Sweeney will hit the bench as Javier Baez picks up the start at shortstop. Sweeney should still receive the bulk of the opportunities at shortstop down the stretch as he looks to stake a claim to a full-time role with the big club heading into 2025. Since getting promoted from Triple-A Toledo last Friday, Sweeney has gone 2-for-11 with a home run and two RBI over his first three big-league games.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Hits first MLB home run

Sweeney went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Cubs.

Sweeney went deep in the second inning with a runner on, giving him his first MLB long ball. The 24-year-old has now appeared in three games for the Tigers, going 2-for-11 with four strikeouts. Sweeney came over from the Dodgers in last month's Jack Flaherty trade, and he had some success in the minors before his first promotion to the majors, so he may get an extended opportunity to settle in at his new level, possibly at the expense of veteran Javier Baez.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Not starting Tuesday

Sweeney isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Sweeney will get a chance to regroup after going 1-for-7 with four strikeouts across his first two career big-league games. Javier Baez will get the starting nod at shortstop instead and bat ninth.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Idle vs. southpaw

Sweeney is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees.

Sweeney made his major-league debut Friday, going 1-for-3 with one strikeout. With the Yankees sending southpaw Carlos Rodon to the mound Saturday, the lefty-hitting Sweeney will retreat to the bench. Javier Baez will start at shortstop and bat eighth.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Contract selected ahead of debut

The Tigers selected Sweeney's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Friday.

Acquired from the Dodgers in last month's Jack Flaherty trade, Sweeney has slashed .267/.345/.450 with 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases over 107 contests at the Triple-A level this season. The 24-year-old has played shortstop almost exclusively in the minors and should see most of the reps there against right-handers, with Javier Baez perhaps limited to a short-side platoon.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Headed to majors

The Tigers are expected to call up Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.

Sweeney was acquired from the Dodgers on July 30 as part of the return for Jack Flaherty. Since reporting to Triple-A Toledo, the 24-year-old infielder has slashed .381/.447/.667 with two homers and nine RBI across 47 plate appearances while also swiping four bags in 11 games. He has played almost exclusively at shortstop throughout his minor-league career and could now take playing time away from Javier Baez, who has struggled at the plate for most of the season.

  • Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Dealt to Detroit

The Tigers acquired Sweeney and catcher Thayron Liranzo from the Dodgers on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Jack Flaherty, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Sweeney is on the move to his second organization in less than a year after the Dodgers acquired him from the Yankees in December. The 24-year-old shortstop was a first-round pick in 2021 and has a .254/.334/.427 slash line with 13 home runs and 16 steals in 96 games at the Triple-A level this season.

  • Dodgers' Trey Sweeney: Shipped to Dodgers

The Dodgers acquired Sweeney from the Yankees on Monday in exchange for left-hander Victor Gonzalez and infielder Jorbit Vivas, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.

Los Angeles has a full 40-man roster and needed to clear spots for free-agent pickups Shohei Ohtani and Joe Kelly, so the team will move on from Gonzalez and Vivas and take back a non-40-man prospect in Sweeney. A 23-year-old shortstop who was a first-round draft pick in 2021, Sweeney spent the entire 2023 season at Double-A Somerset, with whom he slashed .252/.367/.411 with 13 home runs and 20 stolen bases across 472 plate appearances. Sweeney will likely get his first taste of the Triple-A level in 2024 as he moves on to a new organization.

  • Yankees' Trey Sweeney: Advances to Double-A

The Yankees promoted Sweeney from High-A Hudson Valley to Double-A Somerset on Tuesday.

Sweeney will essentially be filling the roster spot vacated by top Yankees shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe, who was advanced to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last Friday. A 2021 first-round pick, Sweeney has thus far spent his entire second professional season at Hudson Valley, with whom he slashed .241/.350/.415 with 14 home runs and 29 stolen bases over 457 plate appearances.
