• Diamondbacks' Jordan Lawlar: Will start opener in CF

  Lawlar will start in center field in Arizona's Cactus League opener Saturday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. This will be Lawlar's first start in center field in a Diamondbacks' uniform. He was given reps in center during winter ball and has been working with outfielders during spring drills. As part of the team's adjustment to being without injured outfielders Corbin Carroll (hand) and Lourdes Gurriel (knee) for rest of spring training, Lawlar is expected to see time in the outfield in camp and into the regular season.

• Diamondbacks' Jordan Lawlar: Could see time in CF

  Lawlar could see regular playing time in center field this spring, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Lawlar came up through the system as a shortstop and was introduced to second and third base over the last couple of seasons. With established starters ahead of him in the infield, the plan, which began during winter ball, was to turn Lawlar into an outfielder. He was in line for playing time in left field this spring as part of a group of players that will fill in for the injured Lourdes Gurriel (knee). Those plans could change after the Diamondbacks lost another outfielder; right-fielder Corbin Carroll suffered a wrist injury Tuesday that will him keep out until at least the start of the regular season. As a replacement for Carroll, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo mused about shifting center-fielder Alek Thomas to right. That would give Lawlar an opportunity to acclimate to center field, which was the team's first choice for the infielder-turned-outfielder.

  Lawlar played center field Tuesday in his first game with Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League. Lawlar has never played the outfield as a pro, but he's being introduced to center field in winter ball as the Diamondbacks evaluate how the 23-year-old fits into their roster picture for 2026. The former top prospect is a shortstop by trade, but that position is being held down by Geraldo Perdomo with the big club. Lawlar played some third base last season for the Diamondbacks, but manager Torey Lovullo shied away from him down the stretch during their playoff push due to defense, instead preferring Blaze Alexander there. The hot corner is still an option for Lawlar, but a successful transition to outfield would solve a problem for the Diamondbacks, who will be without Lourdes Gurriel (knee) for most of the season. Lawlar's offensive potential is considered better than that of either Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy.

His 44.7-mph, check-swing roller to first base with the bases loaded was enough to plate the winning run and walk off the Giants. The 23-year-old prospect has produced following an 0-for-30 run in the majors this season. Lawlar has hit safely in eight of his last 10 appearances (six starts), going 9-for-26 (.346) with six doubles, five RBI, two steals and five runs scored.

  Lawlar started at third base and went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Twins. Lawlar lined a double to left field and scored in the Diamondbacks' three-run fourth inning. Following an initial 0-for-11 run upon being called up in late August, Lawlar is batting .304 (7-for-23) with five doubles, three RBI, two steals and four runs scored over last eight contests. He hasn't been an everyday member of the starting lineup, but that could change in the short term after Blaze Alexander (elbow) was removed from Sunday's game. Testing on Alexander's elbow came back negative, but it was very swollen postgame, per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. He'll undergo further testing Monday and is day-to-day heading into that night's series opener against the Giants. Lawlar stands to benefit from any time Alexander misses, as those two have shared third base since the beginning of the month.

Lawlar picked up his first steal this year at the major-league level after his RBI single in the seventh inning. The infield prospect has played regularly against southpaws but has also been in the lineup versus two of the last four right-handers the Diamondbacks have faced. Lawlar has yet to hit his way into a larger role, batting .098 with two RBI, three runs scored, two doubles and no home runs over 15 games in the majors this season, though his bat is coming around with four hits over his last four games.

That hit snapped an 0-for-31 streak in the majors this season and 0-for-36 going back to his first cup of big-league coffee in 2023. He followed up with a sharp single in the seventh inning, attacking a 1-1 sinker over the plate. Lawlar did not see a two-strike count, which is something manager Torey Lovullo talked about after the game with Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. " I know he's trying to do everything right and perfect, take pitches, see pitches, drive up pitch counts and different things," Lovullo said. "I went to him before the day started. I said, 'Go early if you need to go early, get your swing synced up.'" With the hitless burden out of the way, Lawlar may be more relaxed and confident going forward.

Lawlar's three-K night continued a trend that was evident in his previous visits to the majors: striking out a lot. In two brief stints with Arizona, he's been overwhelmed by the pitching, collecting 20 strikeouts over 56 plate appearances. HIs presence in the lineup resulted in Blaze Alexander, who had been the primary third baseman since the Eugenio Suarez trade, being moved to second base Friday while Ketel Marte served as the DH. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports that Lawlar would see time on the left side of the infield while Alexander migrates around the field, including time in center field. The manager added that Lawlar will be in the lineup against every left-hander, and the club will mix-and-match against righties.

Lawlar has been sidelined since late June due to a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Now healthy, Lawlar will look to ramp things up at Reno before likely finishing the season back in the big leagues with the Diamondbacks. With Eugenio Suarez shipped off to Seattle at the trade deadline, Arizona will surely want to get Lawlar plenty of everyday looks to close out the season with an eye toward the 2026 campaign. Lawlar was overmatched in his previous stint in the majors during an eight-game stretch in May, as he failed to record a hit across 22 trips to the plate.

  The Diamondbacks optioned Lawlar to Triple-A Reno on Thursday, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix reports. Lawlar earned a promotion to the big leagues May 12 after slashing .336/.413/.579 through 173 plate appearances in Triple-A. However, he failed to record a hit over 19 at-bats at the MLB level and never had a clear path to playing time with the Diamondbacks, so he'll head back to the minors. Ildemaro Vargas signed a major-league contract with Arizona on Thursday and will fill Lawlar's place on the active roster.

  Lawlar is batting .354/.446/.656 over 24 games for Triple-A Reno. He's started 14 of those 24 contests at second base. Lawlar came up through the system as a shortstop, but a position switch for the team's top prospect was signaled when the Diamondbacks extended shortstop Geraldo Perdomo this spring. Lawlar is currently riding a seven-game hit streak, during which he's 15-for-30 with five walks, two home runs, two triples, four doubles, 12 RBI, five steals and 10 runs scored. "He's driving the ball to all fields," Arizona farm director Chris Slivka told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. "He's controlling his bats. He's getting more experience over there at second base, getting more familiarity with the position and the reads, the angles and double play turns. He's looked really good on both sides of the ball, so he's obviously trending in the right direction." That direction should eventually lead to the majors, but there isn't an obvious path to regular at-bats once second baseman Ketel Marte (hamstring) returns from injury. Lawlar has played some third base, which could be an option if Eugenio Suarez doesn't improve on his .690 OPS.

The 22-year-old began a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League over the weekend, but quickly aggravated the hamstring injury he suffered in mid-June. Lawlar has played in just four games for Triple-A Reno this season due to injuries and won't be back on the field for the Aces anytime soon. A return in late August is likely the best-case scenario in what's shaping up to be a lost campaign for the Diamondbacks' top prospect.
