  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Strong finish to regular season

Pfaadt (11-10) picked up the win Sunday against San Diego, allowing one run on three hits and a walk across 5.1 innings. He struck out nine. Pfaadt's September has been a roller coaster, as he's yielded four or more runs in three of six starts but given up only five runs in his other three appearances combined. In those three impressive starts, he racked up 31 strikeouts over 18 innings. Pfaadt has a 4.71 ERA and a 185:42 K:BB across 181.1 innings in the regular season, and if the Diamondbacks make the playoffs, he's likely to be part of the team's rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Another ugly outing

Pfaadt (10-10) took the loss Tuesday against the Giants, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four over 2.2 innings. Pfaadt fell flat on his face again after delivering a brilliant outing his last time out during which he racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts. All the major damage against him came from home runs. Patrick Bailey took him deep in the second and then Michael Conforto extended the lead with a three-run blast in the third. Pfaadt has allowed nine home runs over his last nine starts and has seen his ERA jump from 3.92 to a 4.80 in eight starts since Aug. 7. Arizona hasn't revealed its pitching plans for the final series of the regular season this weekend against the Padres, but Pfaadt would be available on normal rest to take the hill Sunday.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Fans 12 in victory

Pfaadt (10-9) earned the win over Milwaukee on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out 12 batters over seven innings. Pfaadt had been struggling mightily entering Thursday, posting an 11.34 ERA over his previous four outings. He bounced back in a big way against the Brewers, inducing 21 swings-and-misses en route to a career-high 12 punchouts. The Diamondbacks could certainly use a turnaround by the right-hander as the team attempts to hang on to a wild-card berth over the closing days of the campaign.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Chased in second inning

Pfaadt (9-9) took the loss Saturday versus the Brewers, allowing eight runs on seven hits and three walks while failing to record a strikeout over 1.2 innings. Pfaadt was on the hook for a seven-run second inning that was capped off by Willy Adames' grand slam. This was the fifth time in six starts that Pfaadt has given up at least four runs, though this was by far the shortest outing of the season for the 25-year-old. His ERA ballooned from 4.42 to 4.81, and he's added a 1.27 WHIP and 160:39 K:BB through 166.2 innings over 29 starts. He's nearly at his career high for innings, which is 167 across all levels in 2022, and it appears he's wearing down a bit toward the end of the campaign. He's tentatively projected to make his next start in a rematch at Milwaukee.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Hit hard Tuesday

Pfaadt (8-7) took the loss Tuesday against the Mets, allowing eight runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out six over 4.2 innings. Pfaadt allowed two runs in the second inning, including a leadoff solo home run to Pete Alonso, and things completely imploded in the fifth. The Mets began the inning by reeling off five straight hits against Pfaadt, leading to three more runs before he was eventually pulled with the bases loaded. Jordan Montgomery, who was recently demoted to the bullpen, came in and allowed another three runs before finally getting out of the frame. Tuesday's loss was Pfaadt's first since June 19 despite him having a 6.29 ERA over his last six starts. For the year, he owns a 4.31 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 145:32 K:BB in 154.2 innings. Pfaadt lines up to face the Dodgers at home this weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Ties career high with 11 punchouts

Pfaadt (7-6) earned the win over Colorado on Monday, allowing four runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out 11 batters over seven innings. Pfaadt's control was on point in the victory, as he threw 73 of 94 pitches for strikes and didn't walk any batters. The right-hander also induced 19 swings-and-misses en route to 11 strikeouts, matching the career-best mark he previously set against Seattle on April 28. Pfaadt hasn't taken a loss in nine straight starts, and he's posted a 3.33 ERA along with a 51:7 K:BB over 54 frames during that span.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Allows five runs in win

Pfaadt (5-6) picked up the win over the Pirates on Saturday, allowing five runs on seven hits over six innings while striking out four. Pfaadt surrendered a solo home run to Oneil Cruz in the top of the first before going 1-2-3 through the next three innings. The right-hander would then struggle his way through the fifth, allowing three consecutive hits to open the frame, leading to three more runs coming home for Pittsburgh. Still, Pfaadt was able to come away with his fifth win of the campaign and the second in his last three starts despite the lackluster outing. He's now gone at least six innings in each of his last three starts and in six of his last seven overall. Saturday also marked the first time in his last five outings that he surrendered more than one run.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Fires seven shutout frames

Pfaadt allowed a hit and a walk over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Sunday. He struck out seven in the extra-innings loss. Pfaadt was dominant, as the only hit the Cubs could muster against him was an infield single. However, Shota Imanaga dealt seven innings of one-run ball with 10 punchouts, which prevented Pfaadt from stringing together consecutive wins. Pfaadt forced 13 swinging strikes and allowed only one runner to reach scoring position. Over his last four outings, he's given up just two runs over 23.1 innings, lowering his season ERA to 3.74 over 20 starts. Pfaadt's next outing is lined up to be at home against the Pirates.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Cleared to start Thursday

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that Pfaadt (ankle) will start Thursday's game against Atlanta at Chase Field, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. Pfaadt's most recent start Saturday against the Padres was cut short when he was struck on the left ankle by a comebacker, but he was diagnosed with nothing more than a bruise after X-rays returned negative. The right-hander was able to complete his between-starts bullpen session with no apparent discomfort, so he shouldn't face any restrictions when he takes the hill Thursday on his typical four days' rest.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Hit by comebacker, leaves game

Pfaadt was removed from Saturday's game against the Padres after being struck in the foot by a comebacker in the fifth inning, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Luis Arraez hit a 98-mph comebacker at Pfaadt that ended up hitting the 25-year-old pitcher in the left foot/ankle area. Pfaadt allowed one run on seven hits and no walks with six strikeouts over 4.1 innings prior to exiting. The Diamondbacks will likely send Pfaadt in for imaging.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Posts quality start Sunday

Pfaadt allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings Sunday against the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision. Pfaadt carried a shutout into the fifth inning before serving up a solo home run to Zack Gelof to tie the game at 1-1. That was the lone mark against him, though it was enough to cost him a chance at the win after the Diamondbacks didn't take the lead back until the bottom of the seventh. Sunday was the third time in June Pfaadt punched out eight batters, but it came on the heels of consecutive starts in which he combined for just two strikeouts in 12.2 innings. Length has been a strength for Pfaadt, as he's gone at least six innings in 13 of his last 15 starts. The 25-year-old owns a 4.28 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 94:26 K:BB in 103 innings and lines up for his next start against division-rival Padres over the weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Ends up with no-decision

Pfaadt allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 6.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Tuesday. Pfaadt pitched into the seventh inning for the second start in a row, but it resulted in him giving up a three-run home run to Ryan Jeffers that tied the game at 4-4. Arizona got the lead back in its half of the frame, but Pfaadt was already out of the game, leaving the win to reliever Kevin Ginkel. Through five starts in June, Pfaadt has allowed 17 runs over 30 innings with a 23:12 K:BB. He's now at a 4.45 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 86:24 K:BB through 97 innings across 16 starts this season. Pfaadt (2-4) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings to take the loss versus the Rangers on Tuesday. Pfaadt covered at least six innings for the sixth start in a row, but this was the third time this year he's allowed at least four earned runs -- Josh Smith had an RBI single in the third inning and Corey Seager continued his power surge with a three-run home run in the fifth. Pfaadt is now at a 4.16 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 63:12 K:BB through 67 innings across 11 starts. He's projected to make his next start on the road versus the Mets.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Picks up win No. 2

Pfaadt (2-3) got the win over the Dodgers on Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out seven over six innings. Pfaadt picked up a win for the first time since his season-opening start against the Rockies on March 31. His first run allowed was unearned off a throwing error by Gabriel Moreno and then the Dodgers finally got to him in the sixth for a pair. Pfaadt only gave up one barreled ball on the evening and now has five straight quality starts and seven or more strikeouts three times. The 25-year-old now owns a 4.05 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 58:11 K:BB in 60 innings and lines up to face the Rangers on the road next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Stuck with loss in quality start

Pfaadt (1-3) took the loss Friday as the Diamondbacks fell 4-2 to the Orioles, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings. He failed to strike out a batter. The 25-year-old right-hander produced his third straight quality start and fourth of the season on 88 pitches (56 strikes), but Pfaadt generated only six swinging strikes as he came up empty in the strikeout department for the first time in 26 big-league starts. In fact, he'd never fanned fewer than three batters in an outing before Friday. Pfaadt will take a 4.60 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 42:8 K:BB through 47 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Reds.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Allows 10 hits in loss

Pfaadt (1-2) took the loss against the Padres on Saturday, allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits over six innings. He struck out four. Pfaadt struggled with San Diego's lineup throughout the contest, allowing hits to three of the first four batters he faced and surrendering three runs over the first four innings -- though one of those was unearned on account of a fielding error by Blaze Alexander. The right-hander was later relieved by Brandon Hughes in the seventh after surrendering back-to-back singles to open the frame, which led to an eight-run inning for the Padres. Despite his struggles on the night, Pfaadt still managed to log his second consecutive quality start and has now posted a 15:0 K:BB over his last two outings. However, he also allowed a season-high 10 hits in Saturday's loss and hasn't posted a win since March 31.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Falls short of quality start

Pfaadt yielded two runs on two hits and three walks over 5.1 innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out four in the loss against the Cardinals. Pfaadt stifled the Cardinals over five shutout innings before a two-run single by Lars Nootbaar knocked him out of the game in the sixth. Since earning a win in his season debut, Pfaadt has allowed 15 earned runs over his last 24 innings. Despite striking out only four batters, he forced 10 whiffs Monday, his second-highest total of the season. Pfaadt will carry a 4.97 ERA into his next outing, which is projected to be in Seattle this weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Offers mixed bag Saturday

Pfaadt gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Atlanta on Saturday. He struck out seven. The good is that Pfaadt induced a career-high 20 swinging strikes on 87 pitches in addition to the seven strikeouts. The bad is that his final line still didn't look great, and he wasn't able to secure a win even after being spotted a 6-0 lead before taking the mound. Pfaadt now boasts a 13:1 K:BB over his first 10.2 innings this season but also has a 5.06 ERA.
