  • Dodgers' Chayce McDermott: Sent to Triple-A

McDermott was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday. McDermott tossed an inning Sunday against the Angels and will be sent to the minors in favor of a fresh arm. Jonathan Hernandez, who signed a deal with the Dodgers on Monday, will take McDermott's place on the big-league roster.

  • Dodgers' Chayce McDermott: Joins big-league roster

The Dodgers recalled McDermott from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday. The former Oriole joined the taxi squad Saturday and is now on the Dodgers' active roster. Between two Triple-A affiliates this year, McDermott has a 5.27 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 25:14 K:BB over 13.2 innings.

  • Dodgers' Chayce McDermott: With Dodgers on taxi squad

McDermott is with the Dodgers on Saturday as a member of the team's taxi squad, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. McDermott was acquired by the Dodgers from the Orioles in mid-April, and the right-hander sports a 4.32 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB across 8.1 innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He may be added to the 26-man roster for Sunday's series finale against the Angels depending on how much the Dodgers utilize the bullpen in Saturday's game.

  • Dodgers' Chayce McDermott: Dealt to Dodgers

The Orioles traded McDermott to the Dodgers on Thursday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Axel Perez, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. McDermott was DFA'd by Baltimore on Saturday, but his move to the Dodgers will put him back on a 40-man roster. The 27-year-old has made all five of his appearances at Triple-A this year, where he's given up four earned runs across 5.1 innings while striking out nine batters and walking six. He'll report to Triple-A Oklahoma City to begin his tenure in his new organization.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Turning heads in relief role

McDermott has impressed the Orioles early on in camp as he transitions to a full-time relief role, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner reports. McDermott wasn't able to solve his command issues as a starting pitcher, but the early returns as he shifts to the bullpen have been promising. The righty worked this offseason with Mason Feole -- a pitching coach based in Rhode Island -- on posture and alignment and has made strides with his command. McDermott has also bumped his average fastball velocity from 93 mph to 96 mph and has struck out five of the seven batters he's faced so far in Grapefruit League play. The 27-year-old is in the running for a spot in the Orioles' Opening Day bullpen and could eventually push for high-leverage appearances.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Staying in bullpen

Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias confirmed Wednesday that McDermott (back) will prepare in spring training to handle a relief role during the 2026 season, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. McDermott made a spot start for the Orioles in his 2024 big-league debut, but after battling a shoulder injury to close out that season and then a lat strain to begin the 2025 campaign, he struggled to find his form. The right-hander then sustained a minor elbow issue in July and ended up shifting to a relief role over the final two months of the season between the majors and Triple-A Norfolk. McDermott was placed on the injured list Sept. 23 due to back discomfort, but he appears to have had a healthy offseason. With the Orioles' starting candidates in generally good health entering 2026, McDermott isn't needed as rotation depth will have to make his mark out of the bullpen during the spring in order to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Placed on 15-day IL

The Orioles activated McDermott from the bereavement list and placed him on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to back discomfort. McDermott's season is over after the 27-year-old right-hander posted an ugly 15.58 ERA, 2.77 WHIP and 9:12 K:BB across 8.2 innings for Baltimore this season. He served up three home runs and 15 earned runs in his limited work.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Moves past elbow issue

McDermott (elbow) rejoined the Triple-A Norfolk rotation Saturday, striking out one over 1.1 innings while allowing five earned runs on four hits and two walks. McDermott exited his final start before the All-Star break July 10 due to right elbow discomfort, but Norfolk never placed him on the injured list. Though McDermott ended up missing his first turn through the rotation of the second half, the right-hander made enough progress in his recovery from the injury to take the hill over the weekend. Through 11 appearances (10 starts) with Norfolk this season, McDermott owns a 7.80 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 42:35 K:BB in 42.2 innings.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Struggles with control in loss

McDermott (0-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Brewers after allowing three runs on four hits and five walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out two. Piggybacking off opener Keegan Akin, McDermott struggled with his control while delivering just 37 of his 75 pitches for strikes. The 26-year-old right-hander generated a meager three swinging strikes, and he's now given up three home runs in his first 7.2 innings of the season after conceding two homers Tuesday. McDermott owns an uninspiring 8.22 ERA, 2.09 WHIP and 7:8 K:BB over his two major-league outings this season.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: In line to start Tuesday's game

McDermott was added to the Orioles' taxi squad Monday and is expected to start Tuesday's game in Milwaukee, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. McDermott showed flashes in a spot start last week against the Twins, striking out five while yielding four runs over three innings. He missed the first month of the season with a lat injury and hasn't thrown more than 65 pitches in any outing, so McDermott is unlikely to go deep into Tuesday's start unless he's efficient.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Sent back down after spot start

The Orioles optioned McDermott to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday. McDermott was up as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Twins, starting the second game and allowing four runs over three innings. The right-hander will rejoin the rotation at Norfolk and wait for another opportunity with the big club.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Activated and optioned

The Orioles reinstated McDermott (lat) from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Baltimore has an opening in its rotation during the upcoming week after demoting Charlie Morton to the bullpen, but McDermott apparently isn't being viewed as a candidate to fill the void while he builds back up from the right lat strain that kept him out for all of spring training and the first month of the regular season. McDermott kicked off his rehab assignment with Double-A Chesapeake this past Sunday before moving up to Norfolk for his second start Saturday, when he struck out three over four scoreless innings. The 26-year-old righty tossed 57 pitches in that outing, but once he gets stretched out into the 75-to-90-pitch range at Triple-A, he could be a more realistic option for the big-league rotation.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Rehab assignment on tap

McDermott (lat) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Chesapeake on Sunday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. McDermott has been on the injured list all season due to a right lat strain that he suffered in February. He's been facing hitters at the team's complex in Florida for the past several days and has now been given the green light to test his lat in a competitive setting. Because he missed nearly all of spring camp, he will likely require several starts in the minors before being activated off the IL.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Placed on 15-day IL

The Orioles placed McDermott on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right lat strain, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. McDermott resumed mound work in mid-March but still needs time to build back up. Once healthy, he will likely be sent to Triple-A Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Not yet cleared for activities

McDermott (lat) said Tuesday that he feels "really good," but he's not sure when he'll be cleared to begin a throwing progression, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. McDermott has been limited to strengthening exercises since being diagnosed with a mild right lat/teres strain earlier this month. The injury has likely eliminated any chance he had to make the Orioles' Opening Day roster, but he could have a shot to be ready to join the rotation at Triple-A Norfolk at the start of the season.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Goes four frames in MLB debut

McDermott allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against Miami on Wednesday. McDermott was called up Wednesday to make his big-league debut after posting a 3.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 91.0 innings in Triple-A. The right-hander got through three scoreless frames against the Marlins but struggled in the fourth, giving up three runs on four hits, including a Josh Bell homer. That proved to be his final frame, as Baltimore brought in a reliever to begin the fifth. Though he didn't pitch particularly well, there's a good chance McDermott will get another turn in the rotation with Baltimore hosting a doubleheader against Toronto in five days.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Likely to make MLB debut Wednesday

McDermott is likely to be called up from Triple-A Norfolk make his major-league debut Wednesday in Miami, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. McDermott was added to the taxi squad Tuesday, and the Orioles have since announced that Corbin Burnes will start Thursday, filling one of the two open spots in the rotation for the series in Miami. The Orioles still have an opening for Wednesday, and McDermott is fully expected to fill the void. The 25-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.96 ERA and 129:54 K:BB over 91 innings this season with Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Joins taxi squad, could get call-up

The Orioles added McDermott to their taxi squad Tuesday, signaling that he could soon be formally called up from Triple-A Norfolk, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Baltimore currently has a vacancy in its rotation after sending Cade Povich down to Norfolk prior to the All-Star break, and McDermott would appear to be in line to fill the void Wednesday in Miami for what would be his major-league debut. The right-hander has collected a 3.96 ERA and 129:54 K:BB over 91 innings this season with Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Better control since May

McDermott has a 3.79 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 54.2 innings over his last 10 starts for Triple-A Norfolk. McDermott walked 23 batters in 21.1 innings over his first six starts of the season, but he's been much more efficient since the calendar turned to May. There are some question marks behind Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez in Baltimore's rotation, and if more reinforcements are needed from Triple-A at some point this summer, McDermott may finally get his shot.
... See More ... See Less
  • Orioles' Chayce McDermott: On Triple-A IL

McDermott was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Norfolk on Sept. 16 with a back strain, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. The International League's championship is next week, so this may mean the end of McDermott's minor-league season. The 25-year-old righty logged a 2.49 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 31.2 percent strikeout rate and an 11.7 percent walk rate in 50.2 innings across 10 appearances for the Tides after tossing 68.1 innings at Double-A earlier in the year. McDermott hasn't had a walk rate below 11 percent in the upper levels of the minors, which could result in him eventually ending up in the bullpen. However, he's got a solid three-pitch mix in his 94-mph fastball (touches 96 mph), high-spin curveball and low-to-mid-80s slider, so if he can cut the walks slightly, he could get a look in the big-league rotation sometime next year.
