Hinch said that Brieske hurt himself during a pitchers' fielding practice drill. The skipper does not believe the injury is serious, but he did not offer a guess as to when Brieske might be available to pitch in games. The right-hander is projected for a middle-relief role in Detroit this season.
The Tigers and Brieske (forearm) avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.1575 million contract Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
It was a forgettable 2025 season for Brieske, as he held a 6.55 ERA over 22 appearances with the big club and ended the year with a right forearm strain. Brieske landed on the 15-day IL on April 18 due to right ankle inflammation. He made one rehab outing with High-A West Michigan on Wednesday, when he struck out two batters in a scoreless inning without allowing a hit or walk. To make room on the 26-man roster, the Tigers optioned Tyler Owens to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move.
