  • Brewers' Jeferson Quero: Set for shoulder surgery

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Wednesday that Quero will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Quero suffered the injury in Triple-A Nashville's first game of the season while diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt. His rehab from surgery is expected to take around nine months, so Quero should be ready for the start of spring training. The 21-year-old was added to the Brewers' 40-man roster last offseason after posting a .779 OPS with 16 home runs at Double-A Biloxi in 2023.

  • Brewers' Jeferson Quero: Bumped to 40-man roster

The Brewers selected Quero to their 40-man roster Monday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Quero would have been eligible for the Rule 5 Draft had he not been added to the 40-man roster ahead of Tuesday's deadline, and considering he's viewed as one of the organization's top catching prospects, Milwaukee unsurprisingly opted to protect him. The 21-year-old backstop could open the 2024 season at Triple-A Nashville after holding his own at Double-A Biloxi in 2023, slashing .262/.340/.443 with 16 home runs, a 10.2 percent walk rate and a 17.8 percent strikeout rate.

Quero has been placed on the 7-day injured list retroactive to July 23 due to left hand soreness, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Quero's injury comes at an unfortunate time, as the backstop had been raking to the tune of a .364/.500/.500 line in 12 games this month. On the plus side, the issue doesn't appear to be severe on the surface, so he could be back in action within the next week.

Quero was invited Friday to the major-league side of Brewers camp this spring, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Quero won't come close to cracking the Opening Day roster in Milwaukee -- he's yet to appear in a game above High-A ball -- but a stint in MLB camp might prove valuable in the long term. The 20-year-old catcher has flashed impressive power and speed so far in the lower minors, and his defensive work behind the plate drew high praise in the 2022 Arizona Fall League.
