Cristian Mena opened the 2025 season in Triple-A but made the most of his three big-league appearances, allowing only one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six across 6.2 innings, earning a win and a hold in the process. Those kinds of outings had him on the inside track to earning a permanent spot on the Diamondbacks' major-league roster, but those aspirations vanished after he suffered a teres major strain in his right shoulder. He landed on the 60-day IL in mid-June and has yet to be cleared to throw, which puts his availability for spring training and the start of the 2026 season in jeopardy. Mena's control when healthy is a concern, but it's hard to ignore his K-BB rate (18.8 percent) in the minors and his whiff rate (30.4 percent) in the majors in 2025, albeit with a small sample size for the latter. Depending on how his recovery goes, Mena could sneak his way back onto the major-league roster in 2026, giving him fantasy value for strikeouts for those who have the space to hold onto him while on a potential rehab assignment.

    Manager Torey Lovullo said Thursday that Mena has been shut down from throwing after aggravating his strained right shoulder, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Lovullo added that there aren't any plans in place for Mena to undergo surgery to address the issue, and the team will attempt to slowly build him back after a period of rest. The 23-year-old righty has been sidelined since he initially strained his teres major in June, and it's unknown whether his latest setback will force him to begin the regular season on the injured list.

Mena got off to a brutal start, allowing the first two batters to reach before surrendering back-to-back home runs in the opening frame. The right-hander then hurled two scoreless frames before being relieved by Bryce Jarvis to open the fourth, though the former also issued two walks over that final stretch, in addition to being charged with a balk.
