Anderson made a single five-inning relief appearance for the Pirates in 2021, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out just a single batter. He now owns a career 5.82 ERA in 38.2 innings at the highest level, which probably leaves him searching for a minor-league deal this winter. He ended his season on the injured list but was merely dealing with a bruised foot, which is unlikely to be a concern by next spring.

Oakland's Triple-A Las Vegas released Anderson June 17 after he posted a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings this season. Now the righty, who has a career 6.15 ERA in 33.2 big-league innings between 2018 and 2019, joins the Pirates' minor-league system.

Anderson started off strong, easily retiring the top of the Angels' lineup, including strikeouts to Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Unfortunately, he also served up two-run homers to both Kole Calhoun and Ohtani in the brief outing, which proved to be his worst of this season. Over six appearances (four starts), the 26-year-old owns a dismal 7.13 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB. With Frankie Montas suspended, Anderson could see more opportunities on the hill, but he will need to turn things around. He'll get another shot Tuesday at home against the Twins.

The right-hander wasn't particularly sharp, throwing 49 of 76 pitches for strikes before getting the hook. Anderson gained some job security in the Oakland rotation when Frankie Montas was slapped with an 80-game suspension, but Anderson will need to pitch better than this to keep his spot in the long run, especially once Jesus Luzardo (shoulder) and Sean Manaea (shoulder) are ready to claim jobs.

Unless he exceeds expectations and impresses in his first outing with the Athletics, Anderson will likely only be making a spot start. The team's doubleheader earlier in the weekend against Texas coupled with an upcoming off day Thursday will allow the Athletics to get by with a four-man pitching staff until June 18, at which point long reliever Aaron Brooks could be ready to rejoin the rotation. Even as a streaming play, Anderson doesn't inspire much confidence for fantasy purposes after posting a 6.26 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 37:26 K:BB in 54.2 innings at Triple-A.
