• Angels' Jose Soriano: Nabs start for Cactus League opener

  Soriano (forearm) is scheduled to start the Angels' Cactus League opener Saturday versus the Dodgers, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Soriano missed the final two weeks of the 2025 season while recovering from a right forearm contusion, but he seemingly moved past the injury quickly during the offseason and reported to spring training with no limitations. Angels manager Kurt Suzuki has already confirmed that Soriano has locked down a rotation spot, and the right-hander could even challenge Yusei Kikuchi for the Opening Day nod. Soriano wrapped up the 2025 campaign with a 10-11 record, 4.26 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 152:78 K:BB across 169 innings over 31 starts.

• Angels' Jose Soriano: Settles with Angels

  Soriano (forearm) agreed to a one-year, $2.9 million contract with the Angels on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Soriano worked as a starter for the entirety of the 2025 season, though he landed on the injured list with a forearm contusion in mid-September. X-rays came back clean, so he'll presumably be ready to roll once spring training begins. Soriano should slot into the middle of the rotation after posting a 4.26 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 31 starts during 2025.

  The Angels placed Soriano on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right forearm contusion. Soriano was taken out of his most recent start Wednesday after getting hit on the forearm by a comebacker. X-rays on his forearm came back negative, but the Angels will place him on the injured list anyway, putting an early end to his season. The 26-year-old will finish 2025 with a 4.26 ERA and 1.40 WHIP alongside a 152:78 K:BB across 169 innings. Sam Aldegheri was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move.

  Soriano (10-10) allowed eight runs on six hits and five walks while striking out four over 2.1 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Athletics. Soriano had won three of his last four starts, posting scoreless lines in each victory, but it was again the Athletics that got to him. He posted quality starts in his first two matchups against the A's this year, but they've responded by tagging him for 13 runs across eight innings in his last two starts against them. Soriano has been prone to blowups this year -- this is the eighth time he's given up five or more earned runs and the ninth time he's been charged with at least five runs. Over 29 starts, he has a 4.07 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 148:73 K:BB through 163.2 innings. He's tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Twins.

Soriano delivered his third scoreless start of his last four outings, shutting down the Astros and notching his most strikeouts in his last 12 appearances. A five-run start against the Athletics on Aug. 17 spoiled Soriano's stats over that four-start stretch. Soriano had five scoreless outings in 24 starts before his recent streak. Through 161.1 innings, Soriano has a 3.68 ERA and a 144:68 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start at home against the A's.

  Soriano (9-9) threw 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and issuing one walk while striking out six batters, to earn the win over Texas on Monday. Soriano's previous start had come eight days ago because he missed some time while on the paternity list. The extra days off appeared to serve the right-hander well, as he kept Texas from producing any extra-base hits over 5.2 scoreless frames. Soriano couldn't quite record a quality start -- he was pulled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth after allowing the final two batters he faced to reach base -- but this was nonetheless a strong bounce-back after he gave up five runs over 5.2 innings in his previous start. Soriano will try to build on Monday's excellent outing the next time he takes the mound, which lines up to be against Houston this weekend.

Soriano fired 102 total pitches but managed to generate only 10 whiffs while notching five or more Ks for the fifth time in his six post-All-Star break starts. Soriano was very sharp Monday, limiting the Dodgers to two harmless singles and two walks. He notched his fourth quality start over his past five outings, though the one game in which he didn't accomplish that feat was a seven-run, four-inning blowup against Tampa Bay his previous time on the mound. Soriano has been prone to the occasional ugly outing this year -- he has given up five or more runs on six occasions -- but he's also racked up seven appearances of six-plus frames without allowing an earned run. Overall, he's at a 3.84 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 125:63 K:BB over 143 innings spanning 25 starts.

Soriano gave up two home runs to Julio Rodriguez, but both were solo shots. This was Soriano's second quality start in a row, and while he's allowed three homers over those games, he's given up just four runs in 13 innings. For the season, he's at a 3.79 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 108:58 K:BB through 126 innings across 22 starts. The 26-year-old has already blown past his previous career high of 113 innings from last season, and he experienced arm fatigue last August, so it'll be important to keep an eye on how he holds up for the last two months of 2025. He's tentatively scheduled for a home start versus the Rangers next week.

The fourth inning was a rather disastrous one for Soriano, who allowed five runs on three hits (two doubles) and three walks in that frame alone after firing three hitless innings to begin his outing. The five walks set a season high as well. While Soriano has logged at least six frames and allowed one run or fewer in five of his last eight outings, he's now yielded at least five runs in the other three appearances during that span. With a 4.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 95:52 K:BB through 108 innings for the year, he'll be hard to trust this weekend in a difficult assignment at home versus the Diamondbacks.

He also got back in the win column for the first time since April 10 versus the Rays. Soriano's continued success has come from keeping the ball down -- he hasn't allowed a home run in his last five starts and has given up just three long balls all season. That's helped to keep his ERA at 3.57 despite a 1.48 WHIP and 46:27 K:BB over 58 innings. His next start is expected to be in a favorable home matchup versus the Marlins this weekend.
