Cubs' Alexander Canario: Out with hamstring strain
Triple-A Iowa placed Canario on its 7-day injured list Friday with a right hamstring strain, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Iowa deactivated Canario just over a week after he was carted off the field with the injury July 24 against Indianapolis. The 24-year-old outfielder is without a clear timeline to return to action. Canario retains a spot on the Cubs' 40-man roster but had been with Iowa since July 19 following a brief stint with the big club. He maintains a .243/.336/.514 slash line over 283 plate appearances at the Triple-A level for the season.

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Joins big-league club
The Cubs recalled Canario from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The 24-year-old was up with the Cubs early in the season and posted an .815 OPS in 25 plate appearances, and he'll receive another look as Cody Bellinger heads to the injured list with a fractured finger. Canario could have at least a semi-regular role with Bellinger and Mike Tauchman (groin) both sidelined.

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Returns to bench Wednesday
Canario is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.
Canario is back on the bench Wednesday after going 1-for-2 at the dish in Tuesday's 4-2 loss. He's now been excluded from the lineup five times in the past six games and doesn't look as though he'll benefit much from the absences of fellow outfielders Cody Bellinger (ribs) and Seiya Suzuki (oblique).

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Cranks first home run
Canario went 2-for-6 with a walk, a solo home run and an additional run scored across both games of Saturday's doubleheader against the Marlins.
Canario started in left field and batted ninth in both contests, and he delivered his first 2024 home run in the nightcap. With Ian Happ (hamstring) and Seiya Suzuki (oblique) both out of the lineup for the immediate future, Canario should see more playing time in the short term. The 23-year-old will eventually settle back into a reserve role or return to the minors, but he has a chance to make a strong impression while he's in this elevated role.

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Set for first start of 2024
Canario is starting in right field and batting ninth Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks.
Canario was called up from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, and he'll now draw his first major-league start of the 2024 campaign. The 23-year-old produced a .269/.377/.481 slash line with seven extra-base hits, including two homers, over 52 at-bats with Iowa so far this season. With Seiya Suzuki (oblique) expected to miss at least four weeks, Canario will look to carve out a consistent role with the big-league club for the time being.

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Headed to majors
Canario will be recalled from Triple-A Iowa prior to Monday's game in Arizona, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
The Cubs have yet to make the transaction official, so it's unclear whose spot Canario will be taking on the 26-man active roster. The 23-year-old is off to a nice start with Iowa, slashing .269/.377/.481 with two home runs in 13 contests. Canario will likely operate in a reserve outfielder role during his time with the Cubs.

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Sent down to Triple-A
The Cubs optioned Canario to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
Canario made a push for an Opening Day roster spot but ultimately came up short. The 23-year-old missed much of the 2023 season while recovering from multiple surgeries but did get a cup of coffee with the big club in September. He could be used at all three outfield spots at Iowa.

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Likely to start at Triple-A
While Canario may push for a reserve outfield role in camp, he's likely to start the season with Triple-A Iowa, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Canario gives the Cubs a potential option to mash against lefties, but he's still likely to begin the year in the minors. The 23-year-old made his MLB debut last season and appeared in six games, recording a double, a triple and a home run during that limited run. If Canario impresses at Triple-A, he may force his way into Chicago's plans at some point this summer.

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Belts slam for first MLB homer
Canario went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBI in Tuesday's 14-1 win of the Pirates.
Making his first big-league start and batting ninth as the DH, the 23-year-old helped put the finishing touches on the rout by slugging his first career homer in the eighth inning -- a grand slam off Kyle Nicolas. Canario has flashed big-time power in the minors, launching eight homers in 36 games for Triple-A Iowa this season after mashing 30 over 101 games in the high minors the year before, but he still needs to prove he can make consistent enough contact against major-league pitching to become a significant part of the Cubs' future.
