  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Throws 50-pitch simulated game

Greene (elbow) threw 52 pitches over a three-inning simulated game Tuesday at Great American Ball Park, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Greene came out of the session feeling great. While the successful sim game should set him up to return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday against the Pirates, the team has not yet confirmed as much. If Greene does indeed start Sunday, he would be surely be working on a limited pitch count. The right-hander has been shelved since mid-August with right elbow inflammation.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Scheduled for live batting practice

Greene (elbow) said Thursday that he felt good after throwing live batting practice Wednesday, MLB.com reports. • Reds' Hunter Greene: Throws bullpen session Thursday

Greene (elbow) threw a bullpen session Thursday, MLB.com reports. Greene was able to get back on the mound for the first time since landing on the 15-day injured list Aug. 17 after feeling soreness in his elbow. He's scheduled to throw another side session Sunday, and the Reds are hoping he could return from the IL by the end of the season, though the club has not set a target date.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Good injury news confirmed

Reds manager David Bell said Saturday that Greene is confirmed to be dealing with inflammation in his right elbow after an MRI revealed no UCL damage, MLB.com reports. The Reds received good news on the injury a week ago, but the team and Greene sought more opinions. Three separate doctors have confirmed the diagnosis of inflammation. The right-hander will need at least two weeks for the swelling to subside before he begins a throwing program, so he likely won't be a candidate to return from the 15-day injured list until mid-September in a best-case scenario.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Good news on injury

Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said Sunday that an MRI on Greene's elbow revealed the right-hander's injury is not as significant as originally feared, Thomas Harrigan of MLB.com reports. Krall added that Greene will get a second opinion, but at this point, the injury is "minimal" and a "best-case scenario." The right-hander is eligible to come off the injured list Aug. 29, but it's too early in the process to put any timeline on Greene's potential return.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Dominates again with 11 punchouts

Greene (8-4) earned the win over San Francisco on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out 11 batters while issuing one walk over six scoreless innings. Greene racked up an impressive 21 whiffs among his 100 pitches, and he recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts. Greene has posted a microscopic 0.27 ERA across 33 innings during the latter stretch, bringing his season ERA down to 2.83. He's enjoying a breakout campaign and living up to the hype that made him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 Draft.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Seven shutout innings

Greene threw seven scoreless innings in Sunday's loss to the Rays, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out five. He did not factor into the decision. Greene stifled the Rays, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning before a Brandon Lowe single ended the bid. The 24-year-old Greene has now fired seven scoreless innings in back-to-back starts, allowing just two hits in each of those outings. The hard-throwing righty also notched his fourth consecutive quality start Sunday, pitching to a 0.33 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB in 27 innings during that stretch. Greene will look to keep rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for next weekend versus the Giants.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Posts season-high 10 Ks

Greene (6-4) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings against the Rockies. He struck out 10. Greene, who was added to the NL All-Star roster a couple of days ago, validated that selection by allowing just a single earned run and only four baserunners while fanning a season-high 10 batters over six innings. It's the fifth time in his last six outings the right-hander has allowed two or fewer runs, a feat he's now accomplished 13 times in 19 starts this season. Greene heads into the All-Star break with a 3.34 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 126 strikeouts over 110.1 innings.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Handed loss in St. Louis

Grene (5-4) allowed a run on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings Sunday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Cardinals. Greene kept St. Louis off the board until Alec Burleson knocked an RBI single in the fifth inning. While that was the only run charged against Greene, Cincinnati was shut out, leaving him with the tough-luck loss. While he needed 95 pitches to get through 4.2 frames, he managed to force 16 swinging strikes. Greene has failed to complete five innings in two straight outings and has just one quality start over his last six appearances. He'll carry a 3.70 ERA into his next start, which is lined up to be at home against Detroit.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Strikes out nine

Greene allowed just two hits over 6.1 innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Pirates. He struck out nine. Greene was dominant Wednesday, matching a season high with nine strikeouts while turning in his first scoreless outing since May 3. However, the right-hander was stuck with a no-decision, as the Reds couldn't break through against Mitch Keller in an eventual 1-0 loss. Still, it was an impressive performance from the 24-year-old Greene, who had struggled to a 5.60 ERA while issuing 12 walks over 17.2 innings in his previous three starts. Overall, he's 5-2 on the year with a 3.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 98:37 K:BB across 88.2 innings. Greene's currently scheduled for a rematch with the Pirates at home in his next start.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Start pushed to Friday

Reds manager David Bell said Sunday that Greene's next start will be pushed to Friday against the Brewers, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Greene gave up nine earned runs in those outings but has a 3.61 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 84:32 K:BB over 77.1 innings this season.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Surrenders five runs Saturday

Greene allowed five runs on three hits and five walks while striking out five batters over six innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Saturday. Greene was staked to an early 4-0 lead but gave it all back when he served up a grand slam to Seiya Suzuki in the bottom of the second inning. All three runners on base for the big homer had reached via walk, so Greene's wildness played a big part in his poor stat line. This was the second time the right-hander has walked five batters in a contest this season, and his 30 free passes on the campaign are fourth-most in the majors.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Impresses in no-decision

Greene did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Dodgers, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight over 6.1 innings. Greene's one major mistake in Sunday's outing was surrendering a two-run homer to Andy Pages in the fourth. That was the only extra-base hit he allowed in the game. He racked up over six strikeouts for the first time since April 16 and generated 22 whiffs, with a good majority of those coming from his fastball that was averaging 98.8 MPH on the afternoon. He now owns a 2.03 ERA over his last five starts, and for the year owns a 3.22 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 66:24 K:BB in 58.2 innings. He currently lines up for a rematch with the Dodgers at home this weekend.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Bounces back with win

Greene (2-2) got the win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings. Greene's only blunder of an inning came in the third after he allowed the first two guys on before they came around to score on a base knock from Blaze Alexander. He otherwise kept Arizona quiet and put together an excellent rebound outing after some mixed results against the Diamondbacks last week. Greene has walked at least a batter in every start this season, but his one free pass was significantly better than the nine he'd given up over his last two starts. The 24-year-old flamethrower now owns a 3.27 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 58:22 K:BB in 52.1 innings. He lines up to complete a two-start week against the Dodgers this weekend.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Lasts just four innings Tuesday

Greene did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's loss to the Mariners. He allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over four innings. Greene was inefficient in this one, needing 98 pitches to get through four frames. He navigated out of a bases-loaded jam in the third by striking out Mitch Haniger to end the inning, but Greene was unable to escape the fourth unscathed as Jonatan Clase knocked in Mitch Garver with a double. Greene has now failed to reach five innings in two of four starts this year and in those two starts he's issued at least three walks. Still, he's allowed two runs or fewer three times and will take a 4.35 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 30:9 K:BB (20.2 innings) into his next start, which projects to come against Philadelphia next week.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Uneven outing Tuesday

Greene allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over 4.1 innings in Tuesday's spring start against the Angels. Greene's lackluster spring continued Tuesday. In between allowing a two-run home run in the second inning and a five-run fifth inning, Greene threw three uneventful innings, including two perfect frames in the second and third. He was scheduled to go six innings, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, but was victimized by misplayed balls in the infield that played a role in the fifth. Greene, who has an 8.25 ERA through 12 innings, has one more chance this spring to build positive momentum before heading into the regular season.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Walks are early concern

Greene allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings in Saturday's spring start against the Rockies. Greene walked two batters for a second straight Cactus League appearance and has allowed four free passes in 4.2 innings. Cincinnati manager David Bell made note of the control issues to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. "In spring training, he continues to work on things," Bell said. "Too many balls right now, he's walking a few. He's got to work towards cleaning that up." The manager added that Greene isn't missing by much and pitchers honing in during spring training is all part of the process.
