  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Fans five in no-decision

Schmidt allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings during a no-decision Friday. He struck out five in the win over Boston. Schmidt rolled through five shutout frames before serving up a two-run homer to Masataka Yoshida that ended his night just shy of a quality start. Those are the only two runs Schmidt has allowed over 10.1 innings since returning from a lengthy stint on the injured list. He forced 13 swinging strikes Friday, including six via the sweeper. He's sporting a 2.41 ERA with a 74:22 K:BB over 70.1 innings this season. Schmidt is projected to start in Seattle next week.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Solid in return

Schmidt did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 2-0 win against the Cubs, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two over 4.2 scoreless innings. Schmidt was lifted at 75 pitches and fell just an out shy of a win in his first appearance since May 26. He kept the Cubs off the board but did show some signs of rust, throwing just 44 strikes and generating only six whiffs. On the season, the 28-year-old owns a 2.34 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 69:21 K:BB across 65.1 innings and will try to increase his workload in a matchup with the Red Sox next week.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Reinstated from IL

The Yankees reinstated Schmidt (lat) from the 60-day injured list Saturday. After being held out since May due to a strained right lat, Schmidt will now return to the Yankees' rotation and start Saturday's game against the Cubs. The 28-year-old righty made three rehab games in the minors, allowing three earned runs and posting an 18:2 K:BB through 11.1 innings. He was only able to get up to 70 pitches during his most recent outing, however, so there's a good chance he makes a relatively early exit during his first start back in the majors. Ian Hamilton (lat) will return from the 60-day IL alongside Schmidt, pushing Phil Bickford and Nick Burdi off the 40-man roster.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Making return Saturday

Schmidt (lat) is scheduled to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Saturday against the Cubs, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. The 28-year-old has been sidelined since late May due to a lat strain but is ready to rejoin the Yankees' rotation after three minor-league rehab starts. Schmidt threw 70 pitches across 4.2 innings during his final rehab outing Monday, so he'll likely have some workload limitations in his first start back in the big leagues. It appears the Yankees will be utilizing a six-man rotation with Luis Gil (back) also making his return from the injured list Friday.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: First rehab start coming Friday

Schmidt (lat) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Friday at Double-A Somerset, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. The Yankees are targeting 50 pitches for Schmidt in the rehab outing, which comes after he gradually raised his pitch count over four live bating practice sessions. Schmidt looks like he'll be given the opportunity to get stretched back out for a starting role, but it's not clear if the Yankees will be able to open up a spot in the rotation for him once he eventually makes his way back from the 60-day injured list. Luis Gil (back) looks on track to return from the 15-day IL slightly before Schmidt, and Marcus Stroman has bounced back from a rough start to the second half with two straight strong starts to help solidify his spot at the back end of the rotation.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Eyeing Aug. 22 for rehab assignment

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Sunday in an appearance on SiriusXM's MLB Network Radio that Schmidt (lat) will begin a rehab assignment around Aug. 22 and is tracking toward a return from the 60-day injured list in the second week of September, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Schmidt and manager Aaron Boone had both recently expressed optimism that the right-hander would return from the IL before the end of August, but that now appears unlikely, unless the Yankees opt to have Schmidt prepare for a bullpen role upon his activation. At least for the time being, the Yankees seem content to have Schmidt get stretched back out for a starting role, which means he'll need to build up his pitch count over two or three minor-league outings before rejoining the big club. Schmidt is slated to throw around 30 pitches in a live batting practice session Wednesday, and perhaps another after that before reporting to an affiliate.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Another live BP coming

Schmidt (lat) threw 20 pitches of live batting practice Tuesday and will face hitters again Saturday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Schmidt was reportedly feeling good after Tuesday's session. After throwing batting practice again Saturday, the Yankees will decide whether or not Schmidt is ready for a rehab assignment. The 28-year-old has exclusively worked as a starter the past two seasons and, per Kirschner, the Yankees intend to build him up as a starter. However, Schmidt doesn't openly oppose coming out of the bullpen if that's what's best for the team. The right-hander has been shelved since late May and remains multiple weeks away from returning.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Close to facing hitters

Schmidt (lat) is expected to be cleared to throw live batting practice soon, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Schmidt is moving along slowly but surely in his throwing program as he works his way back from a right lat strain. The hurler will need to face hitters at least a couple times before being cleared for a rehab assignment. He's still several weeks away from a return but is progressing well.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Throwing bullpen Saturday

Schmidt (lat) is expected to throw around 20 pitches off a mound Saturday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Schmidt hasn't thrown off a mound since being placed on the injured list May 30, making Saturday's session a significant step in his recovery from a strained right lat. The 28-year-old will likely need to complete a few more bullpen sessions before being sent out on a rehab assignment. He seems to still be a few weeks away from activation, and with Gerrit Cole back, there may not be a spot in the Yankees' rotation available for Schmidt once he's healthy.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Moves to 60-day IL

The Yankees transferred Schmidt (lat) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Tuesday. The Yankees announced Schmidt would be shut down from throwing for 4-to-6 weeks once they placed him on the IL on May 30, so his move to the 60-day IL hardly comes as a surprise. He'll be eligible for activation July 26, but a better idea of his return timeline will have to wait until he's been cleared to throw again.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Placed on injured list

The Yankees placed Schmidt on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right lat strain. Schmidt gave up two runs (one earned) in five innings during Sunday's loss to the Padres, and he appears to have injured his lat in the process. His move to the IL is backdated to Monday, so the 28-year-old right-hander will be able to return beginning June 11. In the meantime, Cody Morris will come up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the opening on New York's roster.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Twirls eight scoreless

Schmidt (5-1) earned the win Thursday against Minnesota, allowing three hits and no walks across eight scoreless innings. He struck out eight. Schmidt hasn't allowed a run in 15.2 consecutive innings dating back to his May 4 start against Detroit. The 28-year-old was utterly dominant Thursday, setting a season high in punchouts while tying his season low in hits allowed. Schmidt is well on his way to a career year -- he owns a 2.49 ERA in 50.2 innings -- as a back-end starter in one of baseball's best rotations. He'll look to extend his scoreless streak early next week in Seattle.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Blanks Tampa for fourth win

Schmidt (4-1) earned the win Friday over the Rays, allowing five hits and two walks over 6.2 scoreless innings. He struck out six. It's the first quality start of the season for Schmidt, as he hadn't pitched more than 5.2 innings prior to Friday, but he's won three of his last four outings. The 28-year-old lowered his ERA to 2.95 with a 1.27 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB across eight starts (42.2 innings) this season. He's currently slated for a road matchup with the Twins in his next start.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Fans seven in third win

Schmidt (3-1) picked up the win Saturday over the Tigers, giving up three runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter. The right-hander tied his season high in strikeouts while generating 33 called or swinging strikes among his 91 pitches. Schmidt has been remarkably consistent to begin the season, allowing between one and three runs in every start and completing five innings in six of seven outings, although he has yet to last a full six frames. He'll take a 3.50 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 41:13 K:BB through 36 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come next weekend in Tampa Bay.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Powered to second win

Schmidt (2-0) picked up the win in Wednesday's 7-3 victory over the A's, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out six. The right-hander cruised through five innings before serving up a three-run shot to Brent Rooker in the sixth and getting the hook after 92 pitches (58 strikes), but the Yanks supported Schmidt with three long balls of their own. He's still looking for his first quality start of the season, but Schmidt has lasted five or more innings in four of his five outings, and he hasn't given up more than three runs in any of them. He'll take a 3.55 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB through 25.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Baltimore.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Fans seven in no-decision

Schmidt came away with a no-decision in Friday's 5-3 win over the Rays, allowing one run on seven hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter. The right-hander blanked Tampa Bay for five frames before Richie Palacios tagged him for a solo shot in the sixth. Schmidt exited the game in line for a loss before the Yankees rallied for five runs in the seventh. He generated a massive 37 called or swinging strikes among his 102 pitches, but Schmidt is still looking to iron out some efficiency issues as he hasn't completed six innings in any of his four starts so far in 2024. He'll take a 3.15 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB through 20 innings into his next outing, which lines up to be a juicy home matchup against the A's next week.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: NYY-CLE postponed Friday

Schmidt and the Yankees won't play against the Guardians on Friday since the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up via a split doubleheader Saturday. Schmidt will start Game 1 of the twin bill while Cody Poteet will be called up to start the nightcap, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Adds pitch to arsenal

Schmidt is throwing a new split-finger changeup this spring, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Schmidt threw a changeup on only 1.5 percent of his pitches last season, and when he did go to the offering, batters knocked it around to the tune of a .429 batting average. The right-hander has since worked on changing his grip on the pitch, modeling the adjustment on Blue Jays hurler Kevin Gausman. Of course, the Yankees would be ecstatic if Schmidt's results are anything close to Gausman's, but even if the new offering brings less dramatic improvement it could help the younger hurler bring stability to the back of the team's rotation. Schmidt posted a mediocre 4.64 ERA and 1.35 WHIP along with a 149:46 K:BB last season, but he gave an injury-riddled staff 159 innings, and manager Aaron Boone said in late February that he is guaranteed a spot in New York's Opening Day rotation.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Locked into rotation spot

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Schmidt is guaranteed a spot in the rotation, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Schmidt made 32 starts (33 appearances) for the Yankees last season, flashing promise but ultimately settling for a pedestrian 4.64 ERA and 149:46 K:BB over 159 innings. The Yanks will be hoping the 28-year-old takes a step forward in 2024 with a full season of big-league starting experience under his belt.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Another four-inning outing

Schmidt did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on eight hits over four innings in a 5-2 victory over the Royals. He struck out three without issuing any walks. The 27-year-old hurler limited the damage to a run-scoring single by Nelson Velazquez in the first frame and a Salvador Perez solo homer in the third, but he was removed after just four innings for the second consecutive outing. Schmidt enjoyed a solid 14-start stretch between May 25 and Aug. 8, during which he posted a 6-2 record with a 3.09 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 56:15 K:BB across 70 innings. However, the right-hander faded down the stretch, accumulating a 5.73 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across his final nine starts (44 innings), and he will close out his 2023 campaign with a record of 9-9, a 4.64 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 149:46 K:BB in 159 innings.
