• Angels' Reid Detmers: Beginning 2025 in bullpen

  Angels manager Ron Washington said Monday that Detmers will open the 2025 season in the bullpen, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. Detmers had been competing against Jack Kochanowicz for the final spot in the Angels' rotation. With Kochanowicz winning the job, Detmers will work out of the Halos' bullpen and could be used as a long reliever, per Jack Janes of The Sporting Tribune. Detmers worked in relief in each of his last three spring outings and allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits and two walks while striking out 13 across 11.2 frames.

  Detmers pitched four innings in a Cactus League contest against the Padres on Sunday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out four batters. Kyle Hendricks began the game with five frames for the Angels, and Detmers followed by pitching the remaining four innings. The lefty is locked into a competition with Jack Kochanowicz for the final spot in the Angels' rotation, and both pitchers have made a strong case this spring. Detmers has posted a 2.30 ERA and 12:2 K:BB over 13.2 innings while Kochanowicz has a 2.92 ERA and 7:4 K:BB across 12.1 frames. Jack Janes of The Sporting Tribune reports that the Angels are considering using whichever of the two pitchers doesn't get the rotation spot as a long reliever, though it's not clear if the team is leaning toward Detmers to come out of the bullpen since he's worked in relief in three out of his five Cactus League appearances, while Kochanowicz has started in all four of his outings.

• Angels' Reid Detmers: Impressive out of bullpen Monday

  Detmers entered in the sixth inning of Monday's Cactus League contest against Colorado and tossed four scoreless frames, allowing four hits and striking out four batters. Detmers has been battling Jack Kochanowicz for the Angels' fifth-starter role this spring, but it's unclear if Detmers' appearance in relief Monday -- the first time he has come out of the bullpen this spring -- in an indication that Kochanowicz has won the job. Regardless, Detmers made a strong case to be on the Opening Day pitching staff in some capacity with his performance against the Rockies, during which he limited Colorado to four harmless hits -- all singles -- across four innings. The left-hander lowered his spring ERA to 2.31 with the outing, and he now has an 8:2 K:BB over 11.2 frames, though Kochanowicz has arguably been better with a 1.00 ERA and 6:1 K:BB over nine innings.

Detmers and Jack Kochanowicz are battling for the Angels' fifth-starter role to begin the campaign, and both have been effective in exhibition play thus far.   Detmers (4-8) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three batters over two-plus innings. Detmers gave up a run in the first frame and two more in the second, and things got really out of hand for him in the third. He allowed all four batters he faced in that inning to reach base -- on a home run, two doubles and a single -- and was charged with four runs. It was another implosion for Detmers, who gave up seven runs over 5.1 frames against the White Sox in his previous start. The pair of awful outings come after he appeared to turn a corner upon his return from the minors Sept. 3 -- in his first two starts following the promotion, he yielded just four runs while notching an 18:4 K:BB across 12 innings.

  The Angels recalled Detmers from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. He's scheduled to start the Angels' series opener versus the Dodgers in Anaheim on Tuesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The left-hander will be back with the Angels for the first time since early June after he was banished to the minors following a string of poor starts. He had largely struggled to the right the ship over his first two months at Salt Lake, but Detmers settled into a groove over his final three starts with the Triple-A club (1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB in 21 innings) to earn another chance with the Angels. With the Angels recently adding rookies Jack Kochanowicz, Caden Dana and Samuel Aldegheri to a rotation that already included Tyler Anderson and Griffin Canning, the promotion of Detmers now gives the club six starters. The Angels could keep a six-man rotation in place over the final four weeks of the season to help limit the innings of the young starters while also affording them an additional day of rest between starts.

• Angels' Reid Detmers: Sent down after poor start

  Detmers (3-6) took the loss Saturday against the Mariners, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings. He was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake after the start. Detmers started the season as one of the Angels' top starters and garnered wins in each of his first three starts, striking out 26 batters with two runs allowed across 17.1 innings. However, he hasn't gotten in the win column since. Outside of a decent 8.9 K/9 across his last 40.1 innings, nothing has been working for Detmers lately, as he's allowed 10 long balls and 20 walks over that stretch. The 24-year-old was a reliable arm for Los Angeles the past two seasons and it's possible that a Triple-A stint will help the southpaw regain some confidence and find his previous form. For now, Detmers will give up his spot in the rotation and on the 26-man roster. A corresponding move has yet to be announced.

Detmers started the year 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA through four starts; since then, he's gone 0-5 with an 8.59 ERA and has now failed to complete at least six innings in six consecutive appearances. Now carrying a 5.76 ERA, Detemers will look to snap the skid in his next start, which is projected to be in Seattle.

He kept the ball in the yard Tuesday, which was a positive, but it's not as encouraging as it could be since the Cardinals have been bereft of power this year. Detmers is at a 5.19 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 56:18 K:BB over 50.1 innings across nine starts in 2024. He's projected to make his next start on the road in Houston.
