White Sox's Nick Maton: Latches on with ChiSox as NRI
The White Sox signed Maton to a minor-league contract Tuesday that includes and invitation to spring training, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reports.
Maton, who turns 28 in February, got a cup of coffee with the Orioles in 2024 but spent the majority of the year at Triple-A Norfolk, where he put up an .834 OPS with 16 homers. He can play everywhere other than catcher and will compete for a utility role with the White Sox.

Nick Maton: Becomes free agent
Maton filed for free agency Saturday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
Maton spent most of the 2024 campaign at the Triple-A level, posting a .258/.363/.471 slash line with 16 home runs, 56 RBI, 44 runs and one stolen base over 344 plate appearances. He got into five major-league games with the Orioles and went 0-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts. Maton doesn't offer much in the way of power or speed, but he provides versatility, as he can play multiple positions in both the infield and outfield.

The Orioles designated Maton for assignment Monday.
Maton will be pushed off roster as the Orioles make room for outfielder/first baseman Heston Kjerstad, who was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. During his five-day stay with the Orioles, Maton saw action in just one game and didn't receive any plate appearances.

Orioles' Nick Maton: Moves up to big club
The Orioles selected Maton's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday.
Outfielder Kyle Stowers was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the 26-man active roster for Maton, who will give the Orioles some extra coverage in the infield while Jordan Westburg is day-to-day with a bruised hip. Even if Westburg doesn't heal as quickly as expected and eventually moves to the injured list, Ramon Urias would likely be in line ahead of Maton for a regular role in the infield. Maton had produced a .294/.387/.483 slash line and seven home runs over 168 plate appearances with Norfolk.

The Orioles designated Maton for assignment Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Maton recently required arthroscopic surgery to address discomfort in his left knee, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
It was a fairly minor procedure and the current expectation is that Maton will be fully recovered by the start of spring training in February. The 26-year-old batted just .173/.288/.305 across 293 major-league plate appearances with the Tigers in 2023, but he drew 41 starts at third base, 19 starts at second base and even one start at shortstop.

Tigers' Nick Maton: Provides offense Monday
Maton went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Monday's 9-3 loss to the Twins.
Maton provided the offense, hitting his eighth home run of the season during garbage time in the ninth inning. The 26-year-old has mostly struggled in his first year with the Tigers, as this was his first long ball since July 14 and he's batting just .177 for the season. Maton should continue to work in rotation with the likes of Andy Ibanez, Zach McKinstry and Zack Short in the infield, with none of the options providing that much offensively.

Tigers' Nick Maton: Sits versus righty
Maton is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.
After being called up from Triple-A Toledo coming out of the All-Star break, the lefty-hitting Maton had started in five of the Tigers' first six matchups with right-handed starting pitchers. He's gone just 2-for-14 at the dish since rejoining the big club, however, and Maton may no longer be guaranteed a strong-side platoon role in the infield. He'll take a seat against Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove on Sunday while Andy Ibanez gets the nod at the keystone.

Tigers' Nick Maton: Starting Sunday

Maton will return to the lineup after sitting out Saturday. He went 1-for-3 on Friday with a solo home run. Maton now has seven long balls but has mostly struggled this year with a .166 batting average and .594 OPS. The Tigers are lacking in reliable offensive threats, however, so Maton should still get an opportunity to turn things around at the plate.

Tigers' Nick Maton: Recalled, starting Friday
The Tigers recalled Maton from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, and he will start at second base and bat seventh in the series opener against the Mariners.

He is slashing just .163/.289/.287 across 239 plate appearances with the Tigers this season and has a long way to go before he can be considered viable in shallower fantasy leagues.
