  • Bryan Sammons: Signs with Japanese team

The Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball signed Sammons to a one-year contract Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Sammons will have the ability to earn more than $1 million if he hits all of his incentives. The left-hander posted a 3.62 ERA and 18:9 K:BB over 27.1 frames with the Tigers in 2024 before being removed from their 40-man roster last month.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Jettisoned off 40-man roster

The Tigers outrighted Sammons from the 40-man roster Monday after he cleared waivers.

Sammons appeared in six regular-season games for the Tigers in 2024, and across 27.1 innings he posted a 3.62 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB. He spent most of 2024 with Triple-A Toledo, and across 22 outings (20 starts), he posted a 6-7 record with a 4.15 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 102:44 K:BB across 102 innings.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Sent down to Toledo

The Tigers optioned Sammons to Triple-A Toledo following Sunday's game against the White Sox.

Sammons earned the win while serving in bulk relief Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 frames. Though he now holds a 1-1 record with a 3.62 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across 27.1 major-league innings this season, the Tigers didn't have a spot in the rotation available for him moving forward. In addition to Ty Madden getting called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move to make his first MLB start Monday in Chicago, the Tigers are also expected to get Casey Mize (hamstring) back in the rotation later this week.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Secures first win

Sammons (1-1) yielded one run on three hits and two walks over 4.1 innings in relief Sunday, striking out three and earning a win over the White Sox.

Sammons entered the game in the second inning after Beau Brieske threw one frame as the opener. The only run the White Sox scored during Sammons' outing came via Andrew Vaughn's solo shot in the third frame. Sammons has found success as a long reliever since being promoted to Detroit; he's thrown at least four innings in five of his six career MLB appearances (zero starts) while registering a 3.62 ERA over 27.1 frames. He should continue being used as a bulk-relief option down the stretch.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Takes first loss Tuesday

Sammons (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits across 4.1 innings of relief to take the loss Tuesday against the Cubs. He walked three and struck out two.

The lefty followed opener Alex Faedo, though Sammons was less effective compared to his last time out, when he allowed just one run across 5.2 innings. He still has a solid 3.91 ERA across 23 innings this season, and the Tigers seem to like Sammons in a bulk role, so he could pick up some wins down the stretch if he pitches well.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Pitches well in bulk role

Sammons allowed one run on two hits across 5.2 innings of relief in Wednesday's 3-2, 10-inning win over the Mariners. He walked two and struck out four.

After opener Beau Brieske tossed 1.1 innings to begin the game, Sammons took over and pitched well, though he left with the Tigers trailing 1-0. While the southpaw was unable to pick up his first MLB win, he did manage to lower his ERA to 3.38 to go along with a stellar 0.70 WHIP across 18.2 innings. If Sammons continues to work behind an opener and pitch well, he could have some fantasy value in deeper formats.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Solid in relief

Sammons did not factor into the decision in Thursday's loss to the Mariners, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over 4.1 relief innings while striking out four.

The lefty took over for opener Brenan Hanifee in the bottom of the third inning and retired the side in order before going on to hurl another two scoreless innings. Sammons would eventually cough up a solo homer to Luke Raley in the sixth, but still pitched into the seventh before being replaced by Tyler Holton. It was only the third appearance of the season for Sammons, though he's pitched at least four innings in two of them while posting a 9:2 K:BB.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Makes brief relief appearance

Sammons retired all four batters he faced out of the bullpen in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Royals in 11 innings.

After tossing 7.1 innings in bulk relief in his MLB debut July 29 versus the Guardians, Sammons seemed poised to fill one of the three open spots in the Detroit rotation this week. The Tigers instead chose to deploy him in a more traditional relief role in his next appearance, as Sammons entered Saturday's contest in the top of the eighth with two outs and runners on first and second. Sammons induced a flyout to get out of the jam, then tossed a clean ninth inning to help send the game to extras.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Covers 7.1 innings in MLB debut

Sammons allowed five runs on four hits across 7.1 innings of relief in Monday's 8-4 loss to the Guardians. He walked one and struck out five.

With Jack Flaherty scratched from his Monday start as the Tigers look to trade him before Tuesday's deadline, the team turned to Beau Brieske as the opener instead, with Sammons used in a bulk role. The 29-year-old found some success in his MLB debut, though he was ultimately done in by three home runs, including a three-run shot by Bo Naylor. While it's a nice moment for Sammons, he's unlikely to have much fantasy impact as an unheralded rookie in Detroit's bullpen.

  • Tigers' Bryan Sammons: Added to roster

The Tigers selected Sammons' contract from Triple-A Toledo on Monday.

Sammons has put up a 4.18 ERA and 78:34 K:BB over 84 innings covering 17 starts with Toledo this season. The left-hander is expected to be used in bulk relief Monday against the Guardians behind starter Beau Brieske, who is unlikely to work more than an inning or two before exiting the contest.
