  Burnes is set to receive a second opinion on the right elbow injury he suffered in Sunday's win over the Nationals after initial tests were inconclusive, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix reports. Burnes appeared to be in significant pain after exiting his start Sunday midway through the fifth inning, but the Diamondbacks haven't provided much word regarding the nature and severity of his injury beyond labeling it as right elbow inflammation. With the MRI he underwent Monday proving to be inconclusive, the Diamondbacks will send Burnes in for additional testing, and Gambadoro relays that the team expects to have more clarity on the right-hander's status by Thursday or Friday. At the very least, Burnes seems likely to miss his next turn through the rotation this weekend in Cincinnati, and fantasy managers should brace for the possibility of a long-term absence for 30-year-old.

The Diamondbacks' bullpen then butchered the outing for Burnes, allowing a seven-run eighth inning to cost the right-hander a win. He's rattled off five straight quality starts and has gone seven innings three times in that span. He's at a 2.72 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 57:25 K:BB over 59.2 innings across 10 starts this season, as his slightly elevated walk rate (3.8 BB/9) hasn't come back to bite him too often yet. Burnes' next outing is projected to be at Atlanta next week.

"As we anticipated, Saturday's looking really, really good," Lovullo said of Burnes' status. Burnes wasn't able to start Monday's series opener against the Mets as initially planned after he was diagnosed with a right shoulder inflammation following an MRI on Friday. Though Burnes looked to be at risk of landing on the 15-day injured list, his shoulder responded well to a cortisone injection, and Lovullo relayed that the right-hander checked off the final box in his recovery by completing a bullpen session Wednesday. Despite Burnes receiving a clean bill of health, fantasy managers in shallower leagues may want to tread carefully with him during his upcoming start. In addition to drawing a tough matchup versus a potent Dodgers lineup, Burnes' underlying numbers (4.64 SIERA, career-low 7.9 K-BB%) through his first six starts of the season have been far from the ace-level production that the Diamondbacks would have hoped for after signing him to a $210 million contract this winter.

It was a nice performance overall by the star right-hander, though he couldn't stick around long enough to get his third straight quality start. Burnes began the game with three clean innings and yielded a season-low three hits and one earned run, also tying a season high with eight punchouts. He committed a fielding error in the sixth inning, so both of the runs allowed in the frame were unearned, much to the delight of fantasy managers. Burnes still has work to do to improve his 4.05 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 25:12 K:BB over 26.2 innings (five starts), but things won't get much easier in his next scheduled outing at New York against the Mets.

Burnes began his outing with three scoreless frames before the Astros tagged him for two runs in the fourth. Following a 1-2-3 fifth inning, the veteran righty folded in the sixth, giving up five hits -- all singles -- to allow four runners to score. In fact, all eight of the knocks Burnes allowed in the contest were singles, so he wasn't exactly hit hard, though the right-hander gave up too much contact with just six whiffs and two punchouts. He still has a respectable 3.28 ERA on the campaign, but over his past four starts he's uncharacteristically posted an 8.71 ERA over 20.2 frames.
