  • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Bound for Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Simon to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Simon will give up his spot on the 26-man active roster to outfielder Oneil Cruz (hand), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list. After getting the call from Triple-A on Aug. 5, Simon saw a fairly steady role for the Pirates, starting in eight of the club's ensuing 11 games while slashing .290/.333/.323 with one stolen base, four runs and two RBI over 34 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Heading to bench Sunday

Simon is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. After going 1-for-7 with a run scored in the first two contests of the series, Simon will get a breather. His move to the bench will open up a spot in the outfield for Billy Cook, who will make his first start since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

  • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Exiting starting nine

Simon is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest in Miami. Simon had made six consecutive starts and went 8-for-23 at the plate during that stretch, but he will exit the lineup for Thursday's series finale. Brandon Lowe will get a start at designated hitter for the Pirates, while Nick Gonzales shifts to second base and Jared Triolo grabs a start at third base.

  • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Handling regular role

Simon will start at designated hitter and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Marlins. Since being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis a week ago, the switch-hitting Simon appears to have taken hold of a spot in the Pirates' everyday lineup. He'll pick up his sixth consecutive start Wednesday after going 6-for-19 with a a double, a walk, a stolen base, three runs and two RBI in the prior five games. Simon could soon be in danger of a role reduction, however, as the Pirates appear likely to get center fielder Oneil Cruz (hand) back from the injured list either later this week or early next week.

  • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Returning to majors

The Pirates are expected to select Simon's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Simon got his first taste of the majors last season but slashed just .234/.299/.273 across 88 plate appearances between Miami and Pittsburgh. He's spent all of 2026 at Triple-A and will now receive another shot with the big club after batting .322 with an .883 OPS across 99 games.

  • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Eyeing late-March return to action

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Monday that Simon (shoulder) is projected to return to game competition in late March or early April, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. According to Tomczyk, Simon is "doing very well" four-plus months after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder. The 25-year-old has been taking swings in the batting cage without restrictions so far in camp, and he's set to take another step forward next week, when he's scheduled to face live pitching in batting practice. However, because Simon won't be game-ready until late March, he would appear to be firmly out of the mix for a spot on the Pirates' Opening Day roster.

  • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Back with Bucs

Simon (shoulder) signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Thursday. Simon was non-tendered by the Pirates in late November, but he's now back with the organization. • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Moved to 60-day IL

The Pirates transferred Simon (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Hunter Barco. It was announced previously that Simon will undergo surgery in October to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

  • Pirates' Ronny Simon: Labrum surgery on tap

The Pirates announced Wednesday that Simon has been diagnosed with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will undergo surgery in October once the bone heals, MLB.com reports. Pittsburgh placed Simon on the shelf Aug. 30 with an injury the team initially labeled as a dislocated shoulder, but follow-up tests revealed that he was dealing with damage to his labrum. He'll miss the rest of the season, and assuming his upcoming surgery in October goes off without any complications, he's expected to be cleared for baseball activities in early March. Even so, the shoulder issue could make the 25-year-old Simon a non-tender candidate this offseason after he slashed a middling .234/.299/.273 over 88 big-league plate appearances with Miami and Pittsburgh in 2025.
