  • Red Sox's Mikey Romero: Climbs to Double-A

Romero is hitting .243 with six home runs, 25 strikeouts and two walks in 16 games with Double-A Portland.

Romero went on an absolute tear for High-A Greenville in the middle of the summer, slashing .345/.398/.673 with eight home runs in 27 games from July 10 through Aug. 25, which earned him a promotion to Double-A on Aug. 27. The 20-year-old shortstop appears to be a little overmatched against Double-A pitching, but he's still gotten to significant power, and he's ahead of schedule relative to his peers. A first-round pick in 2022, Romero has already more than doubled his career games played total this year, as he has missed significant time with lower-back issues, and he even missed time earlier this year with more back trouble.

  • Red Sox's Mikey Romero: Healthy again at High-A

Romero (back) has gone 7-for-27 (.259 average) with three extra-base hits and one walk in six games since being reinstated from High-A Greenville's 7-day injured list May 14.

Romero opened the season on the IL while completing his rehab for the lower-back injuries that cost him time during the 2023 campaign. He began a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League on May 7 and played in three games before getting the green light to rejoin Greenville.

  • Red Sox's Mikey Romero: Still recovering from back issues

Romero is on the injured list at High-A Greenville as he continues his rehabilitation from lower-back issues that cost him time in 2023, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports.

Romero shouldn't miss too much time, according to Callis. A first-round pick in 2022, Romero struggled at all three stops last year and would likely spend most, if not all, of his age-20 season at High-A once healthy.

  • Red Sox's Mikey Romero: Back on IL with back strain

High-A Greenville placed Romero on its 7-day injured list Aug. 19 with a lower-back strain, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Romero had just been promoted from Single-A Salem on Aug. 15 before suffering the injury in his third game with Greenville on Aug. 17, when his back appeared to seize up on him as he made a throw across the diamond. The shortstop previously missed the first two and a half months of the season with a back injury and could be headed for an extended absence again, though Speier relays that the 19-year-old is expected to avoid surgery. Romero has compiled a .214/.294/.286 slash line with no home runs and two stolen bases over 34 games between three different levels in 2023.

  • Red Sox's Mikey Romero: Begins rehab assignment

Romero (back) will begin his rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League on Friday, Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com reports.

He missed the first 10 weeks of the season with a muscular issue in his lower back, but Romero is batting second and starting at shortstop for the FCL Red Sox on Friday. After a few games, Romero will likely be activated for Single-A Salem.

  • Red Sox's Mikey Romero: Nearing rehab games in FCL

Romero (back) could soon play rehab games in the Florida Complex League, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Romero has been sidelined all season due to a back issue, which Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham described as lower back stiffness. "He is in a full baseball progression -- swinging/fielding daily in Fort Myers," Abraham said. "We are hopeful he will get in games later this month -- the FCL season starts June 5." Once Romero is ready, he'll head to Single-A Salem.

  • Red Sox's Mikey Romero: Season delayed by back stiffness

Romero is on the 7-day injured list with Single-A Salem due to back stiffness, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports.

According to Callis, Romero is expected to be activated sometime this month. Romero dealt with the back issue during spring training. The 19-year-old shortstop will look to build off his impressive 19-game pro debut from last year, where he slashed .304/.368/.506 across rookie ball and Single-A.
