The southpaw spoiled a combined shutout bid by four Houston hurlers as the team went with a bullpen game Friday, with Gordon serving up home runs to Ronald Acuna in the sixth inning and Eli White in the eighth to account for all of Atlanta's offensive damage on the night. After tossing 60 pitches Friday, Gordon is one of the more stretched-out options in the Houston bullpen, making him a candidate to fill the vacant fifth spot in the club's rotation. However, with Gordon having submitted a 7.92 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 25 innings with the big club since the All-Star break, the Astros may prefer to go in another direction the next time a fifth starter is needed Wednesday versus the Rangers.

  Gordon (4-4) took the loss against Boston on Saturday, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out six batters over four innings. Gordon actually gave up fewer hits than his counterpart Walker Buehler, who surrendered nine knocks over 4.1 frames. However, the types of hits given up by the pitchers were dramatically different -- Gordon surrendered five extra-base knocks, including three homers, while all but one of the hits against Buehler were singles. Gordon has had a problem with the long ball throughout the campaign, giving up multiple homers in five of his 14 outings and posting a 1.87 HR/9, which is seventh worst among pitchers who have tossed at least 50 frames. He's managed to maintain a spot in the rotation despite a poor 5.27 ERA, but that may not be the case much longer, as Spencer Arrighetti (thumb), Cristian Javier (elbow) and Luis Garcia (elbow) are all nearing returns from the injured list.

This was the third time in four starts where Gordon has given up multiple homers, though he's done a decent job of limiting the damage when he can keep the ball down. He's yet to give up more than four runs in any start, but he's also pitched into the sixth inning just twice. He's at a 4.54 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 34:5 K:BB through 35.2 innings, and it's that sharp control that could eventually help him find success. Gordon has a tough matchup ahead, as his next start is projected to be at home versus the Phillies.

Gordon got through two scoreless frames before giving up three runs in the third, two of which came on a Yandy Diaz homer. Another long ball -- this time a solo shot by Junior Caminero -- in the fourth inning put Houston behind 4-3 and led to Gordon's first MLB loss. Despite the defeat, Gordon did show some positive traits, as he threw an efficient 53 of 75 pitches for strikes and racked up 12 whiffs along with six punchouts. The southpaw has a nice 20:3 K:BB over his first 19.2 big-league innings, but his ERA and WHIP are less impressive at 5.95 and 1.37, respectively.

  Gordon, who was promoted to Triple-A Sugar Land from Double-A Corpus Christi on Aug. 7, has posted an 8.80 ERA, 2.19 WHIP and 14:9 K:BB in 15.1 innings through his first four starts in the Pacific Coast League. The 24-year-old lefty has struggled thus far at Sugar Land, though that's not unusual, given the hitter-friendly nature of most PCL parks. He's been stung thus far by the long ball (six home runs allowed), and his 11.7 percent walk rate is also up nearly three percentage points from his rate at Double-A (9.1 percent). Gordon had been one of the top strikeout artists in the Texas League prior to getting promoted, racking up 121 punchouts over 93.1 innings.
