  Vasil is stretching out as a starter and will compete for a rotation spot this spring, he recently said on the Baseball isn't Boring Podcast. Vasil made three traditional starts in 2025 but primarily worked as a multi-inning reliever. He allowed eight earned runs across 11 innings as a starter, and he also had a 12.3 percent walk rate across 101 total innings. Those factors suggest Vasil might be best suited to stick in a relief role, but he'll have the chance to prove otherwise this spring.

• White Sox's Mike Vasil: Will remain in bullpen next season

  White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Wednesday that he expects Vasil to remain in the bullpen next season, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Vasil was a starter throughout his time in the minors with the Mets before the White Sox plucked him in the Rule 5 Draft last offseason, so he'd be capable of getting stretched out. However, Getz and the White Sox like the versatility Vasil provides in the bullpen, with his ability to eat multiple innings and appear in high-leverage situations, depending on what is needed. Vasil has posted a 2.45 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 77:47 K:BB over 95.2 innings, picking up five wins, four saves and two holds along the way.

Just when it looked like Jordan Leasure was cementing the White Sox's closer role, manager Will Venable threw a wrench into everything Sunday. Leasure pitched the eighth against the heart of the Tigers order (Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, Wenceel Perez and Dillon Dingler), leaving the ninth for Vasil. The 25-year-old figures to continue garnering occasional save opportunities, as it looks like Leasure is being used in a high-leverage role. Vasil now sports a solid 2.54 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 74:46 K:BB across 92 total frames.

  Vasil (3-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks while striking out one in 5.1 innings. Vasil was very efficient out of the bullpen after the White Sox went with an opener. He needed just 54 pitches to complete five scoreless innings but was pulled in the seventh after the Diamondbacks put two on with one out, leading to a three-run frame. It was a career-long effort from Vasil, who's now pitched at least three innings in seven straight outings. Vasil lowered his ERA to a 2.82 across 54.1 innings and has been effective as a long reliver for the majority of the season.

• Mets' Mike Vasil: Could join big-league rotation

  Vasil is a candidate to replace Tylor Megill (shoulder) in the Mets' rotation, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The Mets are scrambling to patch multiple holes on their pitching staff right now, but Megill's spot in the rotation -- which he only held due to Kodai Senga (shoulder) also being sidelined -- is the biggest. The team also plays 13 games in 13 days beginning Friday, so while they won't need to replace Megill until April 9, multiple arms might need to join the rotation during that stretch. Vasil made his first start of the season with Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, which puts him on turn with Megill, but he allowed four runs in 2.1 innings with a 0:4 K:BB. That poor outing might be enough to discourage the Mets from pushing Vasil to the majors too quickly. Christian Scott, Jose Butto and Joey Lucchesi are other internal rotation options, and the Mets are also said to be interested in signing Julio Teheran, who opted out of his contract with the O's in late March.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound righty has a bulldog mentality, going right after hitters while filling up the zone. He uses his low-to-mid-90s four-seamer up in the zone and mixes in his slider and changeup down in the zone. Vasil is arguably already the Mets' best pitching prospect thanks to this excellent start to his age-23 season.
