Player Outlook
Yanquiel Fernandez's minor league numbers the past two seasons hide the fact he has some of the best raw power in the minor leagues. Scouts have slapped 60 to 70 grade labels on his raw power, but you would never know it statistically scouting his player page. He hit 25 homers in 2023 between High-A and Double-A ball, but has hit 25 homers in the minors of the next two seasons combined. He did reach the big league club last season and flashed some of that bat speed while bombing a few homers around plenty of strikeouts. He also shows a tremendous throwing arm from right field despite a severe lack of range as a slow-footed large man-child. He is just 23 years old and still has a minor league option available. Many hairs have been lost trying to figure out what the Rockies will do on an annual basis, but if this club could give Michael Toglia as much time as it did last season despite his struggles, certainly they can reward Fernandez with plate appearances if he shows something in Talking Stick in camp or down in Triple-A early in the season. A very late dart throw for power upside in deeper NL-Only leagues for sure.

  • Yankees' Yanquiel Fernandez: Stays in organization

The Yankees outrighted Fernandez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday. Fernandez had been claimed off waivers from the Rockies earlier this month before the Yankees designated him for assignment days later. He passed through waivers this time around and will remain in camp with the Yankees as a non-roster invitee. Fernandez slashed just .225/.265/.348 with a 29.9 percent strikeout rate over 147 plate appearances with the Rockies in 2025 in his first stint in the big leagues.

  • Yankees' Yanquiel Fernandez: Catches on with Yankees

The Yankees claimed Fernandez off waivers from the Rockies on Wednesday. After the Rockies designated him for assignment last week, Rodriguez was quickly able to find his way to a new organization. Rodriguez reached the majors for the first time in 2025 and slashed just .225/.265/.348 with a 29.9 percent strikeout rate over 147 plate appearances, but he's just 23 years old and brings plus raw power from the left side of the plate. Barring multiple injuries to other outfielders coming out of spring training, the Yankees likely won't have room for Rodriguez on their Opening Day roster, but his power upside makes him an intriguing flier for New York at the back end of the 40-man roster.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Designated for assignment

The Rockies designated Fernandez for assignment Wednesday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports. Fernandez struggled in his first stint in the majors in 2025, slashing .225/.265/.348 with four home runs and a 29.9 percent strikeout rate over 52 games. It's still a surprise the Rockies are exposing him to waivers, given that he just turned 23 earlier this month and was considered a top-100 prospect a couple years ago. There's a chance Fernandez -- who hit .284/.347/.502 with 13 long balls in 64 contests at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2025 -- gets claimed by another team.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Exiting starting nine vs. lefty

Fernandez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants. Though he'll head to the bench while southpaw Robbie Ray takes the hill for the Giants, the left-handed-hitting Fernandez has gained traction in the everyday lineup versus right-handed pitching. He started in each of the last five matchups with righties, going 7-for-17 with two home runs, two doubles, four RBI and three runs during that stretch.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Two straight starts

Fernandez went 2-for-5 with a double, a two-run home run and two runs scored Friday against the Cubs. Fernandez got a rare opportunity to start in consecutive games, both at designated hitter. He's homered in consecutive contests, potentially making a push for more consistent playing time. Since being recalled July 2, Fernandez has started at least two games in a row only six times.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Pops second career homer

Fernandez went 2-for-2 with a solo home run Thursday against the Astros. Fernandez has gotten minimal playing time since late July, generally starting once every three games. He was in the lineup for the first time in four contests Thursday and took advantage by slugging a solo home run in the fifth inning -- the second of his career. Fernandez has only a .621 OPS across his first 87 plate appearances, though the sporadic playing time likely isn't helping him find a rhythm at the plate.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Fernandez is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox. It's the first time in six games versus right-handed pitching since his recall that the left-handed-batting Fernandez is not in the lineup. Tyler Freeman is in right field and Mickey Moniak will be the designated hitter as the Rockies take on righty Brayan Bello and the Red Sox.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Sent to Triple-A

The Rockies optioned Fernandez to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday. Fernandez is still waiting to make his MLB debut, but he's heading into his second season as a member of the 40-man roster and could be in line to join the Rockies at some point in 2025. The 22-year-old outfielder will first need to show improvement after struggling in his initial taste of the Pacific Coast League upon being promoted from Double-A Hartford last August. Over his 138 plate appearances with Albuquerque, Fernandez slashed .211/.268/.313 with two home runs and 18 RBI.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Making more contact

Fernandez is hitting .277 with a .320 on-base percentage and five home runs in 201 plate appearances for Double-A Hartford. Fernandez has established at past stops that he has at least plus raw power, but while he has improved as a contact hitter in a return to the Eastern League (64.2 Contact% in 2023, 77.7 Contact% in 2024), he's sacrificing impact at the dish. The Cuban right fielder has a poor 19.9 percent soft-hit rate and a career-worst 28 percent infield-flyball rate. He's still just 21 -- the eighth-youngest qualified hitter in the Eastern League -- and the park at Hartford is the most pitcher-friendly home park Fernandez will play in for as long as he remains in the Rockies organization.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Optioned to Double-A

Fernandez was optioned to Double-A Hartford on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Fernandez went 3-for-13 with a homer in seven Cactus League contests, but the 21-year-old was always destined to head back to the minors. He's mega-talented and has loads of fantasy upside if he can rein in the strikeouts.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Added to 40-man

The Rockies selected Fernandez to their 40-man roster Tuesday. Fernandez, 20, put up a .799 OPS with 25 home runs and 92 RBI over 117 games this past season between Low-A Fresno, High-A Spokane and Double-A Hartford. The young outfielder is now protected from selection in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Homers in first Double-A game

Fernandez went 1-for-4 with a home run and two strikeouts in his debut for Double-A Hartford on Tuesday. The Cuban slugger took full advantage of the advantageous hitting conditions at High-A Spokane, slashing .319/.354/.605 with 17 home runs in 58 games before getting promoted to Double-A. Hartford is a more neutral park, so this will be a big test for the 20-year-old as he will routinely be facing pitchers several years his senior. Fernandez's raw power is a clear strength, but he rarely sees a pitch he doesn't like, so it wouldn't be surprising if he goes through some growing pains as one of the youngest players at Double-A.
