Player Outlook
TJ Rumfield got a welcomed change of scenery this offseason when he was shipped from the Yankees to the Rockies for reliever Angel Chivilli. Rumfield, a 25-year-old lefty first baseman, was not going to break through with the Yankees anytime soon, but the Rockies are expected to have an open competition at first base. While Rumfield has an intimidating 6-foot-5, 225-pound frame, he's actually hit over power, having slashed .285/.378/.447 with 16 homers, an 11.9 percent walk rate and an 18.4 percent strikeout rate in 138 games at Triple-A in 2025. He will be competing with the likes of Troy Johnston, Blaine Crim and Charlie Condon this spring for reps at first base. If he can win a strong-side platoon role, Rumfield could be useful in deeper leagues, particularly in home games.

  • Rockies' T.J. Rumfield: Clinches Opening Day roster spot

Manager Warren Schaeffer said Sunday that Rumfield has secured a spot on the Rockies' Opening Day roster, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Rumfield had been attending camp as a non-roster invitee but will wind up breaking camp with the big club after slashing .286/.368/.531 with four home runs and one stolen base across his 57 plate appearances in Cactus League play. The Rockies will officially add Rumfield to the active roster shortly before Friday's season opener in Miami. Though Schaeffer didn't specifically outline what Rumfield's role will look like, the 25-year-old should be in line for regular starts at first base to begin the season, at least against right-handed pitching. The right-handed-hitting Kyle Karros could be a candidate to spell the left-handed-hitting Rumfield when the Rockies face southpaws.

  • Rockies' T.J. Rumfield: Impressing new club

Rumfield is making a case to be the primary first baseman for the Rockies to begin the season, Stephen Harding of MLB.com reports. Rumfield was very productive in the minor leagues while working his way through the Yankees' minor-league system, but he was ultimately blocked and never got a chance to reach the majors. His outlook changed when he was traded to the Rockies in late January, and he has taken advantage early in spring, slugging three home runs across 16 at-bats while striking out only once. Harding currently projects Rumfield to start at first base against right-handed pitching, with Blaine Crim a potential complement to step into the lineup against lefties.

  • Rockies' T.J. Rumfield: Shipped to Colorado

The Rockies acquired Rumfield from the Yankees on Wednesday in exchange for Angel Chivilli, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. Rumfield has been a quality performer the last two seasons in the minors, finishing the 2025 campaign with a .285/.378/.447 batting line, 16 home runs and a 70:108 BB:K over 138 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He appeared unlikely to get much of an opportunity with the Yankees, at least not in 2026, but in Colorado, Rumfield could compete for the Opening Day first baseman job. Rumfield is not currently on the 40-man roster.

  • Yankees' T.J. Rumfield: On fire at Triple-A

Rumfield is slashing .370/.450/.575 with five home runs, an 11.4 percent walk rate and a 12.8 percent strikeout rate in his last 32 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. A 25-year-old lefty-hitting first baseman, Rumfield doesn't have a clear path to playing time in the majors, but he's doing everything he can to make noise in his second season at Triple-A. Rumfield has the hit tool to profile at the bottom of the defensive spectrum, but he may not have the power, as he has a career .443 slugging percentage and has a .189 ISO this season while being an old-for-the-level first baseman.
