• Marlins' Ryan Gusto: Cleared for start of camp

  Gusto (shoulder) will be available to pitch this week as spring training gets underway, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Gusto closed the 2025 season on the Marlins' injured list after he was diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement in late August, but he was able to make a full recovery over the offseason. Between his stops with Houston and Miami last season, Gusto started 17 of his 27 appearances and posted a 5.67 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 101.2 innings. The Marlins could have the right-hander stretch out as a starter during spring training, but he'll likely serve as more of a insurance option for the rotation and could begin the campaign as a long man out of the bullpen.

• Marlins' Ryan Gusto: Lands on injured list

The right-hander was tagged for nine runs during most recent start versus Atlanta on Wednesday and will now be sidelined for at least the next couple weeks.   Gusto (7-6) took the loss against the Blue Jays on Friday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings. He did not record a strikeout. Gusto battled through six innings after giving up three runs in the first, but he managed just six whiffs on 90 pitches and allowed 11 hard-hit balls. It was also the first time in 16 starts this year that the 26-year-old failed to record a strikeout. He'll take a 5.05 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 95:31 K:BB across 98 innings between starting duty and relief work into a home matchup with Atlanta next week.

• Marlins' Ryan Gusto: Will be recalled from Triple-A

  Gusto will be recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Friday's game against the Blue Jays, Craig Mish of FanDuel Sports Network Florida reports. He's taking the spot in the rotation that belonged to Cal Quantrill, who was claimed off waivers by Atlanta on Thursday. Gusto was acquired from the Astros in the Jesus Sanchez deal at the trade deadline will be making his second start with the big-league club. He spun six innings against Atlanta on Aug. 9, allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight. The rookie right-hander has a combined 4.89 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 95:30 K:BB across 92 innings with Houston and Miami this season.

  Gusto (7-5) took the loss against Atlanta in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over six innings. The Marlins acquired Gusto in a deadline deal with Houston and initially sent him to Triple-A Jacksonville. However, the big-league squad needed a spot starter for Saturday's twin bill and added the right-hander as the 27th man. Gusto held his own -- though he took the loss, he notched a quality start and racked up an impressive 15 whiffs en route to eight punchouts. Despite the strong performance, Gusto will need to return to the minors ahead of Sunday's series finale unless the Marlins instead opt to clear a spot on the 26-man roster for him with a different move.

It was an impressive bounce-back performance from Gusto, who picked up his third quality start of the season after giving up eight runs in just 3.1 innings his last time out against the A's. Overall, the 26-year-old Gusto sports a 4.92 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP and 87:28 K:BB across 86 innings this year. While the right-hander certainly pitched well enough to earn another look in the rotation, Gusto could find himself back in the bullpen with both Spencer Arrighetti (thumb) and Cristian Javier (elbow) nearing returns.

The Houston right-hander was favored over Colton Gordon to start the series finale at Los Angeles. Gusto impressed in this 80-pitch appearance, generating a solid 13 whiffs despite striking out just one. The only blemish on his outing came in the second inning via a Dalton Rushing RBI double, as Gusto notched his second quality start of the season. Given this solid performance against the league's top scoring offense, the 26-year-old is likely to garner another turn in the rotation before the All-Star break. If Gusto continues to start, his next outing would line up to come against the Rangers at home next weekend.

However, his two walks represented a season worst, and he couldn't get through the fifth inning despite throwing a season-high 90 pitches. Over 27 innings in 2025, the rookie right-hander has still been a pleasant surprise for the Astros with a 3.00 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 29:6 K:BB so far. With Lance McCullers (forearm) on the verge of being activated from the injured list, Gusto is still in danger of losing his rotation spot.

After working a scoreless frame in relief en route to scooping up his first career win in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Mariners, Gusto now owns a 1.13 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB across eight innings with the Astros. Gusto didn't throw more than 50 pitches in any of his four relief appearances this season nor in his four appearances in the Grapefruit League, so he could be slightly limited from a workload standpoint in his start Saturday.

He gave up one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning during Monday's exhibition against Sugar Land, and it was enough to lock up his spot on the big-league roster.
