  • Rays' Richard Lovelady: Secures second save

Lovelady pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save over the Guardians on Thursday. Lovelady relieved Manuel Rodriguez to open the bottom of the ninth and managed to retire the side in order on just six pitches to lock down his second save of the campaign. It was a nice bounceback performance for the southpaw after he surrendered two runs and took the loss in his previous outing Tuesday. It also marked Lovelady's first save opportunity since Aug. 17 against the Diamondbacks, and he's now held opponents scoreless in six of his last seven relief appearances.

  • Rays' Richard Lovelady: Four-out save

Lovelady didn't allow a baserunner across 1.1 scoreless innings to pick up the save Saturday against Arizona. Manuel Rodriguez began the eighth inning with a 6-1 lead but loaded the bases with two outs. Lovelady was called in to get out of the jam and induced a groundout against lefty Corbin Carroll to end the frame. He then remained in the contest and completed a clean ninth inning to unconventionally earn his second career save. Pete Fairbanks remains the primary closer for the Rays.

Still, he'll be bumped up to Durham to continue his rehab from a strained left forearm.

Jacob Waguespack (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Athletics' Richard Lovelady: Could be in mix for saves

Lovelady (0-3) allowed one earned run on a walk and no hits while striking out one across 0.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Mariners. Lovelady entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with the score knotted at 2-2. He retired two of the three batters he faced but was pulled for Garrett Acton, who was on the mound when the winning run crossed the plate. Lovelady began the season in the minors, but he has pitched well since being recalled, turning in 13 scoreless outings in 16 appearances. It's difficult to decipher the Athletics bullpen due to their lack of wins and standout talent, but Lovelady could see some save chances moving forward -- particularly while Zach Jackson (elbow) is sidelined.

  • Braves' Richard Lovelady: Headed to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Lovelady from the Royals on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations. He was then optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. • Royals' Richard Lovelady: Sent to Triple-A

Lovelady was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Saturday. Lovelady had an excellent spring, pitching eight innings without allowing an earned run or a walk while striking out 10. Despite the strong showing, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports the Royals want Lovelady to work on building up arm strength after missing most of 2022 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. If the southpaw can continue his strong pitching into the minor-league regular season, it shouldn't be long before he's an option for the major-league roster.
