Braves-Reds Combine for 16 Runs in 1 Inning

Player Outlook
After four years as their everyday first baseman, the Rangers sent Nate Lowe to the Nationals last offseason. He struggled to find his rhythm with his new club, ultimately being released in mid-August after recording a .665 OPS, well short of the .791 mark he compiled with Texas. Lowe was quickly signed by the Red Sox, where he filled a need at first base. The change of scenery helped, as he registered a .790 OPS, but Boston still released Lowe after the season. His track record should earn him another chance, but he may be entering the platoon stage of his career after posting a modest .504 OPS against left-handed pitching.

  • Reds' Nathaniel Lowe: Signs NRI pact with Cincinnati

The Reds signed Lowe to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Mark Feinsand and Mark Sheldon of MLB.com report. The 30-year-old Lowe had to settle for a minor-league deal after slashing a disappointing .228/.307/.381 with 18 home runs over 153 regular-season games between the Nationals and Red Sox in 2025. While his left-handed bat could be of use in a righty-heavy lineup, the Reds already have Sal Stewart and Eugenio Suarez projected for everyday at-bats between first base and designated hitter. Spencer Steer is also in the mix for playing time at those spots, so it's difficult to see a current fit for Lowe on the 26-man roster.

  • Nathaniel Lowe: Becomes free agent

The Red Sox non-tendered Lowe on Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Lowe's production dropped considerably in 2025, as he finished the regular season with a .689 OPS across 609 plate appearances between Boston and Washington after never finishing with less than a .760 OPS in his previous six seasons (min. 500 PA). The 30-year-old should still receive a fair bit of interest in the open market from teams hoping for a bounce-back year in 2026, though he may have to take on a platoon role after slashing just .168/.240/.265 against left-handers in this past regular season.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: DFA'd by Red Sox

The Red Sox designated Lowe for assignment Tuesday. Lowe had been set to be non-tendered later this week, so this transaction just serves a way to remove him from the 40-man roster sooner. The veteran first baseman slashed only .228/.307/.381 with 18 home runs over 153 regular-season games between the Nationals and Red Sox in 2025. Lowe will become a free agent once he officially clears waivers.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Absent from Game 1 lineup

Lowe is not in the lineup Tuesday for Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series versus the Yankees. It's southpaw Max Fried on the bump for the Yankees, so the left-handed-hitting Lowe will begin the festivities on the bench. Romy Gonzalez will handle first base and bat cleanup for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Slumping in September

Lowe went 1-for-3 in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Atheltics. Lowe has hit the skids after a productive start to his Red Sox tenure. He sported a .974 OPS with two home runs and eight RBI over his first 12 games in a Boston uniform, but Lowe has languished since then with a .576 OPS and just two RBI in the subsequent 13 contests.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Idle against southpaw

Lowe is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. The left-handed-hitting Lowe was included in the lineup against Cleveland southpaw Parker Messick in Monday's 6-4 win, but he'll hit the bench while the Guardians send another lefty (Joey Cantillo) to the bump for the finale. Romy Gonzalez will check in for Lowe at first base.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Homers in win

Lowe went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 11-7 win over Cleveland. Lowe doubled and scored Boston's first run in the second inning before swatting a solo shot in the third. He'd entered the game on a 3-for-17 run with zero extra-base hits or RBI. The lefty batter was eventually lifted for a pinch hitter (Rob Refsnyder) against left-handed reliever Tim Herrin. Aside from the recent unproductive stretch of hitting, Lowe's provided a boost for Boston as the team's primary first baseman against right-handers, going 12-for-36 (.333) with five extra-base hits and eight RBI over 12 games.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Goes on paternity leave

The Red Sox placed Lowe (personal) on the paternity list Thursday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports. While he welcomes a new child, Lowe will be away from the Red Sox for between one and three days, so he should be back with the team no later than Sunday's game against the Pirates. Lowe had been occupying the strong side of a platoon at first base, but Romy Gonzalez could be in store for more opportunities against right-handed pitching in the short term while Lowe is away.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Heading to paternity list

The Red Sox will place Lowe on the paternity list Thursday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports. Lowe will be permitted to miss up to three games while he spends time with his growing family. Rob Refsnyder (oblique) is expected to be activated off the injured list in a corresponding move to take Lowe's place on the 26-man roster. Meanwhile, Romy Gonzalez will likely benefit from a few extra starts at first base.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Taking seat against lefty

Lowe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. Lowe has gotten off to an excellent start to his time with the Red Sox by batting 5-for-14 with a home run, two doubles, two walks, five RBI and three runs through his first four games, but the Red Sox aren't yet ready to expose the left-handed-hitting first baseman to lefty pitching. For the second straight matchup against a lefty starter (Carlos Rodon), Lowe will cede first base to the right-handed-hitting Romy Gonzalez.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Producing for new team

Lowe went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 12-1 win over the Yankees. Lowe contributed to Boston's seven-run ninth inning with a run-producing single and then scored himself. He's either scored or driven in a run in five straight games since joining the Red Sox. Lowe is 5-for-14 with three walks, two doubles, a home run, five RBI and four runs scored for his new team.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Late-game heroics

Lowe started at designated hitter and went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to Baltimore. Lowe endeared himself to the Fenway Faithful by launching a game-tying, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to set up extra innings. The heroism, however, was short-lived, as the Red Sox subsequently failed to produce a run on bases-loaded situations later in the ninth, and then again in the 10th. In total, the Red Sox were 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Lowe's served as a pinch hitter and DH since being added to the roster Monday. Eventually, he's expected to become the primary first baseman against right-handers.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Makes Boston debut

Lowe entered Monday's game as a pinch hitter, walked and scored a run in a 6-3 loss to the Orioles. Lowe pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth inning and was not needed for the field. He was officially added to the roster Monday and wasn't in the starting lineup against a left-hander. Lowe could enter the starting nine Tuesday against Baltimore right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano.

  • Red Sox's Nathaniel Lowe: Headed to Boston

Lowe and the Red Sox agreed to a one-year contract Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Lowe was granted his release from the Nationals on Saturday and has quicly found a new home in Boston. The 30-year-old had slashed .216/.292/.373 slash line with 16 home runs and one stolen base over 119 contests with Washington, where he had been handling an everyday role at first base. The Red Sox have struggled to find a consistent option at first base this season, and the left-handed-hitting Lowe could occupy the strong side of a platoon at the position with the right-handed-hitting Romy Gonzalez. Lowe owns a .732 OPS over 337 plate appearances versus right-handed pitching this season.

  • Nationals' Nathaniel Lowe: Dropped from 40-man

The Nationals designated Lowe for assignment Thursday. Lowe has significantly underperformed expectations since being traded to Washington last offseason, slashing just .216/.292/.373 (all career worsts) through 490 plate appearances. That kind of production hasn't been worth his $10.3 million price tag, so the Nationals will let him go in order to make room for the return of Dylan Crews (oblique) from the 60-day IL. Lowe's departure leaves Josh Bell as the main option for starts at first base, while opening up DH for the team's young outfielders.

  • Nationals' Nathaniel Lowe: Ends power outage with grand slam

Lowe went 1-for-3 with two walks and a grand slam in Wednesday's 8-7 win over the Royals. He got the fireworks started by hooking a Seth Lugo curveball over the fence in the right-field corner in the first inning. It was Lowe's first homer since July 19, ending a 20-game power drought, and his 16th of the season. The veteran first baseman still has some work to do to put his slump behind him, however -- in 23 contests since the All-Star break, he's batting only .160 (12-for-75) with three doubles, two long balls and seven RBI.

  • Nationals' Nathaniel Lowe: Homers in win

Lowe went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Padres. Lowe extended the Nationals' lead to 4-2 with a 402-foot blast in the sixth inning. The first baseman has three hits in two games since returning from the All-Star break, and he's homered twice with eight RBI and nine runs scored through 14 contests in July. For the season, he's slashing .231/.296/.401 with 15 home runs, 62 RBI, 45 runs scored and one stolen base across 408 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Nathaniel Lowe: Pops 14th homer

Lowe went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's win over the Cardinals. His first-inning long ball off Andre Pallante got the ball rolling on an 8-2 rout. Lowe snapped a 13-game homer drought with the blast, but he's been productive over the last few weeks, slashing .263/.318/.537 over his last 20 contests with five of his 14 home runs on the season and 17 of his 61 RBI.

  • Nationals' Nathaniel Lowe: Swats another homer

Lowe went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a sacrifice fly during Sunday's 13-7 loss to the Dodgers. Lowe has been crushing the baseball lately, clubbing four homers in his last six games, including Sunday's three-run shot off Ben Casparius. The first baseman is 16-for-71 (.225) with 12 RBI and eight runs scored over 20 games in June. He's got a .699 OPS on the year.

  • Nationals' Nathaniel Lowe: Goes deep twice in victory

Lowe went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs Saturday in a 7-3 win over the Dodgers. Lowe homered to left field in the sixth inning and added a second shot to center field in the eighth. This was the first time on the campaign that the first baseman has gone deep multiple times, and Lowe recorded just his second multi-hit effort across his past 12 contests. He's up to 12 home runs and 47 RBI this season, though he's still slashing a modest .227/.295/.395 through 319 plate appearances.
