Jose Corniell only needed 13 months from the time of his 2024 Tommy John surgery until he began his rehab assignment in July 2025. The 6-foot-3 righty quickly made up for lost time, logging a 1.89 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 41:9 K:BB in 38 innings, primarily in the upper levels, before making his big-league debut as a reliever in the final game of the 2025 season. He added 18 innings in the Arizona Fall League, where he was hit hard (7.50 ERA) while striking out 19 and walking seven. Corniell boasts five average or better pitches, although none of them are established plus offerings yet. He has typically shown above-average or better control and could be a No. 3 or No. 4 starter long term. Corniell will likely spend at least a couple months in the Triple-A rotation to start the year, but he'll be an option early in the year if the Rangers deal with injuries.

    Manager Skip Schumaker said Saturday that Corniell has been dealing with back and triceps soreness this spring, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Corniell's injury has prevented him from getting into a Cactus League game thus far, though Schumaker noted that the young reliever looked good during a side session Thursday. The Rangers will continue to bring him back slowly, though his availability for Opening Day doesn't seem to be a concern at this point.

    The Rangers recalled Corniell from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday. Corniell will join the big-league squad for the first time in his career Friday to help replenish the Rangers' bullpen depth following the placement of Chris Martin (undisclosed) and Cole Winn (undisclosed) on the IL.     Corniell (elbow) has begun playing catch and could be game-ready by July or August, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. Corniell is 10 months removed from a right UCL repair. The 21-year-old is on the Rangers' 40-man roster but has yet to advance past A-ball, so he's not a real candidate to see action in the majors this season.     Corniell will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the UCL in his right elbow, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. Corniell has been sidelined all season with an elbow issue. While his injury was initially referred to as inflammation when he went on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Frisco back in early April, subsequent testing revealed a more serious concern. It's not yet clear whether Corniell will have a full Tommy John surgery or internal brace procedure, but in either case he won't pitch again in 2024 and is likely to miss at least a large chunk, if not all, of the 2025 season.

    Corniell will open the season on the injured list at Double-A Frisco with elbow inflammation, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports. This is an ominous injury designation for the 20-year-old righty. Corniell has outstanding control for his age (7.3 BB% in 58.1 innings at High-A) and a quality four-pitch mix headlined by a 94-mph fastball and plus 84-mph sweeper. The fact he was assigned to Double-A before turning 21 illustrates how advanced Corniell is, but this elbow injury could be his first big setback. Per Callis, Corniell is expected back in early June.

    The Rangers optioned Corniell to Double-A Frisco on Sunday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Corniell will get his first taste of the Double-A level to begin the 2024 campaign after he split the 2023 season between Single-A Down East and High-A Hickory. Over 101.2 innings between the two affiliates, Corniell posted a 2.92 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 119:31 K:BB.
