  • Rangers' Willie MacIver: Claimed by Rangers

The Rangers claimed MacIver off waivers from the Athletics on Wednesday. MacIver got his feet wet at the big-league level in 2025, slashing .186/.252/.324 over 32 games for the Athletics. The Rangers have Jonah Heim and Kyle Higashioka slated to handle catching duties in 2026, so MacIver is merely a depth addition.

  • Athletics' Willie MacIver: Lifts third homer

MacIver went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Angels. MacIver entered Sunday in an 0-for-10 skid. The homer was his third of the year and his first during his current stint on the big-league roster, which has featured sporadic playing time as backup to Shea Langeliers. MacIver is batting .200 with a .639 OPS, nine RBI, seven runs scored, three stolen bases and five doubles across 87 plate appearances in the majors this season.

  • Athletics' Willie MacIver: Filling in for resting Langeliers

MacIver will start at catcher and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Angels. With top backstop Shea Langeliers resting for the day game, MacIver will receive a turn behind the plate. Since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Aug. 5, MacIver has gone just 3-for-28 (.107 average) with four RBI, two runs and a stolen base in eight games.

  • Athletics' Willie MacIver: Back in big leagues

The Athletics recalled MacIver from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. The 28-year-old was optioned to Las Vegas in late July but will make a quick return to the majors to replace Austin Wynns (abdomen) on the active roster. MacIver has handled himself well at the plate in his first 17 big-league games this season with a .737 OPS, but he isn't likely to receive regular playing time while serving as the backup to starting catcher Shea Langeliers.

  • Athletics' Willie MacIver: Dispatched back to Triple-A

The Athletics optioned MacIver to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday. With Shea Langeliers (oblique) back from the 10-day injured list, MacIver's presence with the big club was no longer needed. He acquitted himself well during his first stint in the majors, posting a .737 OPS with a couple homers in 16 contests.

  • Athletics' Willie MacIver: Promoted to majors

The Athletics selected MacIver from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The Athletics are swapping out Jhonny Pereda for MacIver as the backup catcher. MacIver has hit the ball well at Triple-A this season, slashing .389/.469/.548 with two home runs, 30 RBI, 27 runs scored and two stolen bases across 147 plate appearances. The 28-year-old MacIver could make his MLB debut sometime this weekend against the Phillies.

  • Rockies' Willie MacIver: Facing long-term absence

MacIver is expected to miss the first 6-to-8 weeks of Triple-A Albuquerque's season after he recently received an anti-inflammatory injection in his right shoulder, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. MacIver was pegged to serve as Albuquerque's primary backstop to begin the season, but the injury will likely keep him on the shelf until around late May or early June. The Rockies signed Grayson Greiner to a minor-league deal Tuesday to bolster their catching depth at Triple-A.
