Player Outlook
Max Schuemann has value in the deepest of AL-Only leagues on a bench because he qualifies at three positions on draft day. Schuemann is a discplined hitter whose best chance to reach base in 2025 was by drawing a walk, which he did 10.3% of the time over his 213 plate appearances. However, despite the discipline and high contact rate, he hit .197 on the season with a .295 OBP. That's tough to do, but his lack of bat speed and power make it difficult for him to hit the ball with authority so he instead attempts to employ the Willie Keeler approach of hitting it were they ain't. Unfortunately, 28 of his 36 hits were singles and that dog just isn't going to hunt on anything but a 12-team AL Only league roster with a bench and injuries. He has some speed, but until stealing first is legalized in the MLB, his chances to use that speed are limited.

  • Yankees' Max Schuemann: Traded to Yankees

The Yankees acquired Schuemann from the Athletics in exchange for minor-league RHP Luis Burgos on Monday. Schuemann was designated for assignment by the Athletics last week and will now head to New York to compete for a reserve infielder job this spring. Schuemann has slashed .212/.306/.297 with nine home runs, 47 RBI, 75 runs scored, 21 stolen bases and a 69:154 BB:K across 672 big-league plate appearances since making his MLB debut in 2024.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: DFA'd by A's

The Athletics designated Schuemann for assignment on Friday. Schuemann will lose his spot on the 40-man roster for the A's to claim Andy Ibanez off waivers. Schuemann appeared in 101 big-league games last season, slashing .197/.295/.273 with two home runs, seven stolen bases, 13 RBI, 20 runs scored and a 22:35 BB:K across 213 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Back with big club

The Athletics recalled Schuemann from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday. Schuemann was sent down to the minors on Aug. 22 after slashing only .200/.303/.288 in 188 plate appearances, but he's back in the big leagues with the Athletics' active roster expanding to 28 men Monday. The 28-year-old will fill a utility role in September.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Sent to Triple-A

The A's optioned Schuemann to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday. Schuemann made the Opening Day roster, and he's bounced around the infield as needed while making the occasional start in the outfield. However, with Jacob Wilson (forearm) back from the injured list, the Athletics are no longer in need of Schuemann's services. The 28-year-old has slashed .200/.303/.288 with a 20:33 BB:K in 188 plate appearances this season.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Getting fourth straight start

Schuemann will start at second base and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Nationals. With Luis Urias (back) sitting out the series finale, Schuemann will stay in the lineup for the fourth game in a row and will make his second straight start at the keystone. Assuming Urias is able to recover from the back issue in short order, he'll likely be part of a three-man committee with Schuemann and Gio Urshela to fill out the second-base and third-base spots until Max Muncy (hand) returns from the injured list.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Taking seat Tuesday

Schuemann isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners. Schuemann is expected to receive regular action at shortstop with Jacob Wilson (forearm) now on the injured list, but the A's will give the former a day off Tuesday following his 0-for-4 performance Monday. Darell Hernaiz will fill in at short and bat ninth.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Launches second homer of 2025

Schuemann went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to Tampa Bay. It's the second time this season that Schuemann has recorded three hits in a game, which was highlighted by his solo homer off Ryan Pepiot in the second frame. Schuemann has started in just 11 games since the beginning of June, but he could see some additional playing time in the short term if Luis Urias (hamstring) and Jacob Wilson (hamstring) remain sidelined.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Filling in for resting Soderstrom

Schuemann will start in left field and bat eighth in Thursday's game against the Tigers. Schuemann will enter the starting nine for the first time since the Athletics' 11-4 loss to the Astros on June 18, when he stepped in for a resting Tyler Soderstrom while Houston sent lefty Framber Valdez to the hill. Though the Athletics haven't been treating the left-handed-hitting Soderstrom as a strict platoon player, he'll sit again Thursday versus Tigers southpaw Dietrich Enns to create room in the lineup for Schuemann, who is slashing .225/.351/.325 with one home run and three steals over 97 plate appearances this season.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Homers in massive loss

Schuemann went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 19-2 loss to the Dodgers. Schuemann started at second base, entering the starting nine for the first time since April 29. He has yet to bat higher than ninth in the order while serving as a utility player throughout the early stages of the campaign. The 27-year-old has done fine when called upon, batting .250 with a .752 OPS, one homer, one RBI, six runs scored, two stolen bases and two triples over 39 plate appearances. However, it'll likely take injuries to other players for Schuemann to carve out a larger role.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Drawing third start of season

Schuemann will start at third base and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the White Sox. Schuemann has the ability to play all over the infield and outfield, but with the Athletics having enjoyed generally good health so far this season from their position players, the 27-year-old utility man hasn't been able to pick up meaningful playing time. He'll be starting Thursday for just the third time in the Athletics' first 19 games.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Looks set for utility role

Schuemann appears likely to win a roster spot in a utility role with the A's, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. He's hitting .227 (5-for-22) in nine games this spring. Schuemann made his big-league debut in 2024 with the A's and posted a .220/.311/.308 slash line with seven home runs and 14 steals in 133 games. He saw most of his playing time at shortstop, but Jacob Wilson appears set as the starting shortstop. Schuemann could be good source of speed (14 steals last season) if he finds significant playing time.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Day off versus lefty

Schuemann isn't in Oakland's lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees. Southpaw Carlos Rodon will toe the slab for New York on Saturday, meaning the left-handed bat of Schuemann won't be part of Oakland's starting nine. Nick Allen will replace him at the hot corner while batting ninth.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Getting day off

Schuemann is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Cubs. Schuemann manned third base for the Athletics in each of the previous five games, but he will begin Wednesday's contest on the bench. Nick Allen will handle the hot corner and bat ninth.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Not in Oakland lineup

Schuemann is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in Houston. Schuemann started both of the first two games of the series and reached base four times, but he'll get a breather for Thursday's matinee. Nick Allen will cover third base and bat ninth for the Athletics.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Two steals, two runs in win

Schuemann went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two stolen bases and two runs scored in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Astros. Schuemann has posted just four multi-hit efforts since the start of August, batting a meager .162 (17-for-105) in that span. While the rookie hasn't played particularly well of late, Wednesday's performance was an exception -- he avoided striking out for the first time in eight games. Schuemann is now at a .224/.315/.315 slash line with 14 steals, seven home runs, 34 RBI, 52 runs scored and 12 doubles over 121 contests. The A's don't exactly have a ton of exciting alternatives, so Schuemann is likely to continue seeing steady playing time at third base down the stretch.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Not starting Saturday

Schuemann isn't in Oakland's lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers. Schuemann will take a seat Saturday after going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in Friday's series opener. His absence will move Tristan Gray to third base while Seth Brown covers first, allowing Daz Cameron to pick up a start in left field.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Homer, three hits in win

Schuemann went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double in Tuesday's win over the Reds. Schuemann homered to give the Athletics a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning and fell a triple shy of the cycle in his first multi-hit game since Aug. 2. It was a much-needed boost for the 27-year-old, as he entered Tuesday in a 2-for-32 slump over his previous 10 games. On the season, he is hitting .233 with seven home runs, 30 RBI, 48 runs scored and 11 steals across 371 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: On base three times Sunday

Schuemann went 0-for-1 with three walks and a run in a win over the Blue Jays on Sunday. The rookie displayed impressive plate discipline out of the bottom of the order, pushing his season on-base percentage to .344 with his first multi-walk tally since July 25. Schuemann has now reached safely in six straight starts, a stretch where he boasts a .450 OBP across 20 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Drives in two Monday

Schuemann went 1-for-4 with a two-run single in a win over the White Sox on Monday. The rookie snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth with his single, which brought home JJ Bleday and Zack Gelof to give the Athletics a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Prior to Monday, Schuemann had gone 11 games without an RBI, a stretch during which he'd hit just .200 overall and a miserable .077 with runners on base. Despite those forgettable numbers, Schuemann may be in the early stages of a resurgence, now having hit safely in three of his past four games.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Reaches double-digit steals

Schuemann went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run in a win over the Angels on Thursday. Several other teammates delivered bigger hits, but Schuemann was productive from the bottom of the order. The rookie now has authored five multi-hit efforts in the last 12 games, and he's reached safely in 11 of those contests on his way to a blistering .400 batting average and 1.003 OPS over his last 46 plate appearances.
