  • Braves' Allan Winans: Back to Triple-A after poor start

Atlanta optioned Winans to Triple-A Gwinnett following its 9-4 loss to Cincinnati in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday. Called up from Gwinnett earlier in the day to make his second start of the season with Atlanta in the opening game of the twin bill, Winans dropped to 0-2 after giving up seven earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings. Though Atlanta has a spot open in its rotation with Max Fried (forearm) on the injured list, Winans took himself out of consideration for another start after his rough showing Wednesday. Atlanta called up lefty Zach Logue from Gwinnett in a corresponding move to provide some length out of the bullpen for the second game of the doubleheader.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Called up, starting matinee

Atlanta recalled Winans from Triple-A Gwinnett. He'll start the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Reds at Truist Park. Left-hander Dylan Dodd was sent out to Triple-A Gwinnett to open up room on the roster for Winans, who is back with Atlanta for the first time since April 11, when he gave up seven runs (six earned) over five innings in a spot start versus the Mets. Winans could have the opportunity to stick around with Atlanta on a more permanent basis this time around, as the club has an opening in the rotation while Max Fried (forearm) is on the shelf. The right-hander will first need to acquit himself well in Wednesday's start before putting himself in consideration for additional turns through the rotation.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Taking hill for Game 1 of twin bill

Atlanta will call up Winans for Triple-A Gwinnett to start the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Reds, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Winans' lone appearance with Atlanta this season came back on April 11, when he surrendered seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks over five innings in a loss to the Mets. He could be needed for additional starts while Max Fried (forearm) is sidelined, but how he fares Wednesday will factor into Atlanta's plans for Winans moving forward.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Optioned to Triple-A

Winans was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett by Atlanta on Thursday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The move comes immediately after Winans was torched for seven runs (six earned) over five innings in a loss to the Mets. Atlanta will need a starter again next week to fill the spot vacated by Spencer Strider (elbow). Bryce Elder, AJ Smith-Shawver, Darius Vines, Dylan Dodd and Hurston Waldrep are candidates to step in.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: New York-Atlanta postponed Wednesday

Winans and Atlanta won't play the Mets on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to a forecast of inclement weather in the Atlanta area. The two teams will make up the postponed game Sept. 26. Winans had been scheduled to start Wednesday in the rotation spot that previously belonged to Spencer Strider (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list over the weekend. Winans' start will be moved to Thursday's series finale, pushing each of the team's other four starters back a day.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Draws start Wednesday

Winans is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Mets in Atlanta, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Winans was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday in a corresponding move for ace Spencer Strider's (elbow) placement on the 15-day injured list, but the expectation was that Winans would be available as a long-relief option for a few days. After going unused Sunday through Tuesday, however, Winans will ultimately take Strider's spot in the rotation, at least for now. Though 2023 All-Star Bryce Elder -- who is currently with Gwinnett -- seems to be a more likely candidate to serve as a longer-term replacement during Strider's stay on the IL, Winans will get the first chance to prove he belongs in the big-league rotation. The 28-year-old previously made six starts for Atlanta as a rookie in 2023, logging a 5.29 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB over 32.1 innings.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Joins big-league bullpen

Atlanta recalled Winans from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. Though he had been a member of Gwinnett's season-opening rotation and will now move up to Atlanta as a replacement on the 26-man active roster for staff ace Spencer Strider (elbow), Winans is expected to provide the big club with a fresh arm in the bullpen who's capable of covering multiple innings. AJ Smith-Shawver, Dylan Dodd, Darius Vines and Huascar Ynoa are all already on the 40-man roster and could be candidates to enter the rotation when Atlanta next needs a fifth starter Wednesday versus the Mets, while Bryce Elder pitched four innings for Gwinnett on Saturday and likely won't be in consideration to replace Strider right away since he would be pitching on only three days' rest.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Optioned to Triple-A

Winans was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett by Atlanta on Monday. Atlanta is now left with 53 players in camp after making a handful of cuts. Winans held a 5.29 ERA but a 34:8 K:BB over 32.1 innings covering six starts in the majors last season and figures to wind up spending some time with the big club in 2024.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Picks up another start

Winans is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Nationals at Truist Park. Max Fried (finger) and Charlie Morton (finger) are closing the regular season on the injured list, so Atlanta will at least temporarily have room in the rotation for Winans. In his return to the big leagues last weekend for a doubleheader in Washington, Winans took a loss in the opener of the twin bill while striking out six and giving up two earned runs over five innings. Through five starts with the big club this season, Winans owns a 1-2 record to go with a 4.33 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Optioned after spot start

Winans was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. Winans was excellent in a spot start for Atlanta in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Pirates, fanning eight batters while yielding just two runs over 6.1 innings in a no-decision. He could have set himself up for another spot start with the big club down the stretch, but for now, Atlanta will send him down to the minors to make room for a fresh bullpen arm.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Recalled for Sunday's start

Winans was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett ahead of his start Sunday against the Pirates. The rookie right-hander made his last start in the majors Aug. 21 versus the Mets and was tagged for seven earned runs over 4.1 frames, but he'll receive another opportunity Sunday. Winans has made two other starts for Atlanta this season and fared much better in those outings with a 1.59 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 11.1 innings.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Optioned after rough start

Winans was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. The transaction comes one day after Winans was roughed up for seven runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.1 innings in a spot start against the Mets. He had been a candidate to pick up another start over the weekend if things went well Monday, but Atlanta now needs his roster spot for bullpen reinforcement.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Recalled for Monday's start

Winans was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. Winans will pitch Monday's series opener versus the Mets and could be in store for a two-start week while he enters the rotation as a replacement for Yonny Chirinos (elbow), who landed on the injured list. The 28-year-old rookie has been excellent in two starts for Atlanta this season, holding a 1.59 ERA and 14:3 K:BB over 11.1 innings. He's worth a look in deeper leagues.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Possible waiver wire pickups

The Braves have struggled to fill the final spot in their rotation basically from the jump, but they may have finally settled on Winans, a 28-year-old of basically no prospect stature who has nonetheless performed with every opportunity he's gotten this season. When last we saw him, he was striking out nine Mets over seven shutout innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader Aug. 12, and he's been pitching that way at Triple-A Gwinnett all year, putting together a 2.79 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 8.0 K/9. None of his four pitches is particularly impressive, with his fastball barely averaging 90 mph, but he mixes them well and generally keeps the ball on the ground, limiting damage. Nobody's expecting him to be the staff ace, but if he can gut out six innings at a time, the Braves offense can take care of the rest. He's expected to rejoin the rotation Monday and lines up for two starts right away.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Dazzles in first MLB win

Winans (1-0) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mets, allowing four hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine. Making his second career start in the majors, Winans showed some nerves in the first inning by loading the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch, but he escaped the jam and went on to dominate the team that let him go in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 draft after the 2021 season. Getting massive run support -- Atlanta wound up winning the contest 21-3 -- couldn't have hurt his confidence, either. The right-hander fired 80 of his 111 pitches for strikes, generating an incredible 39 called or swinging strikes along the way despite a fastball that topped out at 90.9 mph. With Yonny Chirinos struggling as the No. 5 starter, Atlanta could have a tough decision to make the next time that spot in the rotation comes around, which figures to be next weekend at home against the Giants.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Starting first game of doubleheader

Winans will start for Atlanta in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mets, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Michael Soroka was also an option for Atlanta, but the club will go with Winans against his former organization. The 28-year-old allowed two runs over 4.1 innings versus the Brewers last month in his major-league debut.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Contract selected for MLB debut

Winans' contract was selected by Atlanta on Saturday ahead of his scheduled start against Milwaukee. The 27-year-old righty will be making his big-league debut after recording a 2.81 ERA in 18 appearances (13 starts) for Triple-A Gwinnett this season. Since becoming a starter ahead of last season, he's produced above-average groundball rates and avoided walks, but his 22.8 percent strikeout rate is nothing special. He may only be up for one start before returning to the minors once Max Fried (forearm) is ready to rejoin the rotation.

  • Braves' Allan Winans: Making debut Saturday

Winans will be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday to start against the Brewers, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Winans has been rather impressive this season in Triple-A, putting up a 2.81 ERA and 1.01 WHIP through 102.2 innings across 18 appearances (13 starts). With Max Fried (forearm) slated to return within a week or so, it's unlikely Winans makes many more starts with Atlanta past Saturday. However, he will be facing a Brewers offense that ranks last in the NL with a .687 OPS.
