Monday MLB Recap: Shohei Ohtani Gives Up Leadoff HR, Hits Another HR Out Of 2 Spot

Player Outlook
Kaelen Culpepper was drafted 21st overall in 2024 out of Kansas State as a high floor prospect thanks to a steady hit tool and the ability to provide defensive value on the left side of the infield. He showed a higher ceiling than expected in 2025, albeit while being old for his levels. He split his age-22 season evenly across High-A and Double-A, slashing .289/.375/.469 with 20 home runs, 25 steals, a 9.7 percent walk rate and a 17.4 percent strikeout rate in 113 games. He is an aggressive hitter who struggles to get the ball in the air consistently (50 percent groundball rate), and while he went 25-for-29 on the bases last year, Culpepper is just an average runner. He has a big arm, but his lack of high-end athleticism and plus speed may force a move to third or second base eventually, although Culpepper could be deemed an upgrade at shortstop over Brooks Lee sometime this summer. Culpepper has a chance to be an everyday player, but his 25/20 season oversells his short and long term upside.

Fantasy News

  • Twins' Kaelen Culpepper: Promoted to Double-A

Culpepper was promoted to Double-A Wichita after hitting .293/.385/.479 with nine home runs and 15 stolen bases in 54 games for High-A Cedar Rapids. The 21st overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft has shown improved power and speed in his second professional season along with solid walk (19.8 percent) and strikeout (16.6 percent) rates. Culpepper has been developed as a shortstop so far by the Twins, but it's not clear if that will be his eventual defensive home in the majors with Carlos Correa under contract through at least 2028 and Brooks Lee waiting in the wings behind him.

  • Twins' Kaelen Culpepper: Sidelined with hamstring injury

Culpepper was scratched from Saturday's prospect showcase roster because of a hamstring injury, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports. He is expected to be ready for the start of the minor-league regular season, however. Culpepper hit .242/.330/.394 with three home runs between Low-A and High-A last season in just 26 games after signing with the Twins. The 21st overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft has a strong hit tool, but he lacks impactful power or speed.
