  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Starts at third base

Ornelas started at third base and went 0-for-3 in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Mariners.

Ornelas appeared in just his third game since being called up at the beginning of the month. He filled in for Josh Jung, who was shut down for a couple of days due to discomfort in the area near where he underwent wrist surgery earlier this year. The Rangers aren't yet mathematically eliminated from the postseason, but that could happen this weekend. At that point, the club may not want to risk bringing Jung back. If that were to occur, Ornelas and Ezequiel Duran would likely share the hot corner for the remainder of the regular season.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Gets September call-up

The Rangers recalled Ornelas from Triple-A Round Rock ahead of Sunday's 6-4 extra-inning win over the Athletics.

Ornelas' addition strengthens Texas' depth in the infield, but he's unlikely to be in store for regular at-bats so long as Corey Seager, Josh Jung, Marcus Semien and Josh Smith are able to maintain health down the stretch. Prior to his promotion, Ornelas had hit .252 with three home runs and nine stolen bases over 366 plate appearances with Round Rock this season.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Sent to Round Rock

The Rangers optioned Ornelas to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.

Ornelas will return to the minors after appearing in 11 games for the Rangers following his June 30 call-up. He went 3-for-19 with an RBI over that span while serving as a utility infielder. Ornelas will get the chance to play on an everyday basis as he heads back to Round Rock, with whom he's slashed .248/.320/.348 with seven stolen bases, three home runs and 22 RBI across 257 plate appearances this season.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Returning to bench role

Ornelas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays.

Ornelas will hit the bench after he started in each of the last three games, with the last two coming at third base while Josh Smith (glute) was out of the lineup. With Smith returning to his usual post at the hot corner for Sunday's series finale, however, Ornelas looks poised to see light usage moving forward as a utility infielder.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Fills in at 3B

Ornelas started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 3-0 win over the Rays.

Ornelas entered the starting lineup with Josh Smith (hamstring) unavailable. Smith has been the primary fill-in at third base for the injured Josh Jung (wrist), whose return has hit a delay. It was the same injury that forced Smith to miss four games in June, and Ornelas could be in line for starts over the weekend. Since getting called up from Triple-A Round Rock, Ornelas is 3-for-8 with a walk, two doubles, an RBI and a run scored over five games.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Scratched Wednesday

Ornelas was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.

The 24-year-old was set to receive his second straight start at third base Wednesday, but shortstop Corey Seager's (wrist) late addition to the lineup will push Josh Smith back to the hot corner. Ornelas went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and an RBI on Tuesday but may not stick around the roster much longer if Seager is fully recovered.

Ornelas started at third base and went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and an RBI in Tuesday's 7-0 win over the Padres.

Ornelas entered the starting lineup as Josh Smith continued to fill in at shortstop for Corey Seager (wrist). Ornelas and Davis Wendzel are covering third while Seager is unavailable.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Called up Sunday

The Rangers recalled Ornelas from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

The 24-year-old will join Texas ahead of Sunday's series finale in Baltimore since Corey Seager (wrist) is banged up. Ornelas will provide infield depth for the Rangers until Seager is ready for action.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Sent back to Triple-A

The Rangers optioned Ornelas to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday.

Ornelas' stay with the big club lasted just two days, as he was sent back to Round Rock while the Rangers were in need of added pitching depth heading into Wednesday's doubleheader with the Athletics. The 23-year-old infielder appeared in one game during his time with the Rangers, going hitless in his lone at-bat.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Promoted to majors

The Rangers recalled Ornelas from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.

He'll take the 26-man active roster spot vacated by Wyatt Langford (hamstring), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Ornelas, 23, has posted a .720 OPS with two home runs and one stolen base at Round Rock this season, but the Rangers are bringing him aboard mainly for his capable glove in the middle infield. Though he's played exclusively at second base and shortstop this season, Ornelas also saw action at third base and center field in 2023.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Sent to minors

The Rangers optioned Ornelas to Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Ornelas, 23, appeared in eight games for Texas during the 2023 season, but he wasn't a serious candidate to make the Opening Day roster. The infielder should get the chance to play on a near-everyday basis at Round Rock to begin the campaign.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Returns to Triple-A

Ornelas was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.

Ornelas collected one hit and struck out four times in seven at-bats since being promoted Sept. 9. He was sent down Monday along with Sam Huff to make room for Josh Jung (thumb) and Adolis Garcia (knee), who were both activated from the 10-day injured list.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Back in big leagues

Ornelas was recalled by the Rangers on Saturday.

Ornelas got into two games off the bench for the Rangers in August but did not receive a plate appearance. Given that he owns a modest 83 wRC+ in 108 Triple-A games this season, it's unlikely he's been called up for his bat. J.P. Martinez was optioned in a corresponding move.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Heads back to Triple-A

Ornelas was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.

Ornelas spent a week with Texas, but he did not record even one at-bat, so the Rangers decided to remove him from the roster to open up a spot for the returning Travis Jankowski. Given his ability to play both the infield and outfield, Ornelas figures to garner consideration next time there is an opening on the big-league roster.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Officially recalled by Rangers

Ornelas was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.

It was reported Sunday that Ornelas would be called up from the minors, and he officially replaced the injured Josh Jung (thumb) on the roster one day later. Ornelas figures to fill some type of super-utility role in his first big-league stint.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Call-up imminent

Ornelas will be recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Ornelas spent the start of the 2023 campaign at Round Rock and hit .250 with five homers, 54 runs, 39 RBI and nine stolen bases. He'll presumably serve in a depth role with the major-league club since Josh Jung (thumb) will likely require an IL stint.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Sent to Triple-A

The Rangers optioned Ornelas to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.

Ornelas was added to the team's 40-man roster this offseason after a nice showing in 2022 at Double-A Frisco, and he's followed up with an .826 OPS this spring. However, 22-year-old is in need of more seasoning and will open the 2023 campaign with Round Rock.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Added to 40-man

Ornelas was added to the Rangers' 40-man roster Tuesday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

After slashing .301/.362/.425 with Double-A Frisco in 2022, Ornelas was deemed worthy of a spot on the 40-man roster for Rule 5 protection. Given a bit more time to develop in the minors, the 22-year-old infielder has a good shot at cracking the big leagues.
