Pittsburgh selected Wendzel's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.
Wendzel is a 29-year-old infielder whose lone big-league experience was a 27-game stint with Texas in 2024. He earned his chance with Pittsburgh with a good showing at Indianapolis, slashing .246/.360/.491 with nine homers, 34 RBI and two stolen bases over 211 plate appearances. Wendzel can play all over the infield and will likely fill a utility role while with the major-league team.

Wendzel (hand) began a rehab assignment July 8 with the Rangers' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate. Through his first five games with the ACL club, he has gone 4-for-17 with a home run, a triple, three walks, eight runs and five RBI.
Before heading to the ACL, Wendzel had been sidelined for about six weeks after undergoing surgery on his left hand. The Rangers may keep him in the lower levels of the minors for a few more games so he can get his timing back at the plate, but once Wendzel is deemed ready to go, he'll be reinstated from Double-A Frisco's 7-day injured list.
