  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Snares victory Sunday

Marsh (9-9) picked up the win Sunday against Atlanta, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks across five innings. He struck out two. Marsh stepped into a starting role for the Royals' regular-season finale and came away with the victory. The right-hander yielded a homer to Gio Urshela in the third inning but was otherwise excellent. Marsh finishes the 2024 regular season with a 4.53 ERA and a 123:39 K:BB across 129 innings. He's expected to move back to the bullpen for postseason play.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Slated to start Sunday

Marsh will start in the Royals' regular-season finale against Atlanta on Sunday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Marsh shifted to the Royals' bullpen after Michael Lorenzen (lower body) returned from the 15-day injured list Wednesday. However, with the Royals clinching a playoff spot Friday, Marsh will start in the regular-season finale, presumably to open the door for Cole Ragans to start in Kansas City's opening game of the AL Wild Card Series. Across 25 outings (24 starts) this season, Marsh has an 8-9 record with a 4.65 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 121:39 K:BB across 124 innings.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Shifting to bullpen

Marsh will move to the bullpen with Michael Lorenzen (hamstring) set to return from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday against Washington, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The 26-year-old Marsh spent the past month in the Royals rotation but will shift to a relief role after posting a 4.37 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 22.2 innings over five starts during that span. The right-hander has started in 24 of his 25 big-league appearances this season and has a 4.65 ERA and 121:39 K:BB over 124 innings.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Inefficient in ninth loss

Marsh (8-9) took the loss versus the Tigers on Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five over 2.2 innings. Marsh needed 73 pitches (39 strikes) to get eight outs in a poor start. It's a step back after his one-run, 11-strikeout effort versus the Pirates last Friday, and it's the poorest of his five outings since he rejoined the big-league rotation in late August. Marsh is now at a 4.65 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 121:39 K:BB over 124 innings across 25 appearances (24 starts) this year. Michael Lorenzen (hamstring) lasted 3.1 innings in a rehab start last Friday with Triple-A Omaha, but he also experienced more than the usual soreness after that outing. The last spot in the Royals' rotation is due up again on the road versus the Nationals, and it's unclear if Marsh is in contention for that start, which would likely be his last of the regular season if he gets it.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Decent in no-decision

Marsh allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five without walking a batter over five innings, taking a no-decision versus the Twins on Saturday. Marsh threw 60 of 84 pitches for strikes in a decent start, but he received almost no help while he was in the game. The Twins put up both runs against him in the third inning, and it took until the eighth for the Royals to offer a response. Over his last three outings, Marsh has given up nine runs (seven earned) over 14.2 innings, which is a little more stability than he offered in July before he lost his spot in the rotation. Overall, he's at a 4.66 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 105:34 K:BB through 116 innings over 23 appearances (22 starts). Marsh is tentatively projected to make his next start at Pittsburgh.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Filling in for Lorenzen again

Marsh is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Twins in Kansas City. He'll be making his second straight turn through the rotation as a replacement for Michael Lorenzen (hamstring), who was placed on the injured list Aug. 28. Through 22 appearances (21 starts) for the Royals this season, Marsh has gone 7-8 with a 4.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 100:34 K:BB in 111 innings.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Hurt by homers in loss

Marsh (7-8) took the loss Sunday against the Astros, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings. Marsh held the Astros scoreless through three innings but came apart in the fourth after allowing home runs to Yordan Alvarez and Jon Singleton to give the Astros a 3-0 lead. The 26-year-old righty has now allowed a home run in seven of his last eight starts while reaching five innings in only half of them. Marsh holds a 4.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 100:34 K:BB in 111 innings and lines up for a key home start against the Twins over the weekend, assuming he sticks in the rotation.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Recalled for spot start

The Royals recalled Marsh from Triple-A Omaha on Monday. Marsh will draw a spot start in the second game of Monday's doubleheader in Cleveland. The right-hander is serving as the 27th man on the roster and is likely to be sent back down to Triple-A following the outing. Marsh has posted a 4.71 ERA and 93:32 K:BB covering 101.1 innings for Kansas City in 2024.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: In line for spot start Monday

Marsh is scheduled to be called up from Triple-A Omaha to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader in Cleveland, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The Royals are expected to designate Marsh as their 27th man for the twin bill, so he'll most likely be returned to Omaha immediately after his start Monday. Marsh will be rejoining the big club for the first time since late July, when he lost his spot in the rotation following the Royals' trade-deadline addition of Michael Lorenzen. Over his 20 outings (19 starts) with Kansas City prior to his demotion, Marsh accrued a 4.71 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 93:32 K:BB in 101.1 innings.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Struggles in no-decision

Marsh did not factor into the decision in Monday's 8-5 win over the White Sox, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out three. Marsh entered this outing with a 7.80 ERA across 15 innings in July and failed to get out of the fifth against a feeble White Sox lineup. The Royals right-hander lasted just 69 pitches before being relieved as Chicago had knocked five singles and one double off the 26-year-old. After pitching to a 3.76 ERA in 55 innings over his first 10 starts, he has produced a 5.82 ERA across 46.1 innings since June 8. Marsh may not have a spot in the rotation any longer as Kansas City acquired Michael Lorenzen on Monday and have not announced the rotation plans for the upcoming weekend series in Detroit.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Makes relief appearance

Marsh appeared out of the bullpen in Friday's 7-1 win over the White Sox, allowing two hits and striking out one over one scoreless inning. Marsh's last start before the All-Star break was July 10, so this relief appearance was likely just to get him back into his pitching rhythm in a lopsided game. The Royals haven't specified their pitching plans beyond this weekend, but it's safe to assume Marsh will take the hill at some point during their three-game series versus the Diamondbacks that begins Monday. Through 91.2 innings, Marsh has a mediocre 4.52 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 84:29 K:BB across 18 appearances (17 starts).

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Improves to 7-6

Marsh (7-6) earned the win over St. Louis in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out eight batters. Marsh gave up two homers but only one additional hit. The right-hander was atypically prolific in the swing-and-miss department, racking up 16 whiffs and tying his season high with eight punchouts. Marsh notched his second quality start over his past three outings, though his other appearance during that span was a poor one during which he allowed five earned runs across three frames. He's been very up-and-down during the campaign, giving up one or zero runs in six of 17 starts but five-plus runs on four occasions. That's led to a mediocre 4.57 overall ERA.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Labors through loss

Marsh (5-5) took the loss Sunday against Texas, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out four. Marsh tied his season high in hits allowed Sunday and failed to complete six innings for the fourth time in his last five starts. While he didn't surrender a home run, the Rangers did tag Marsh for three doubles. All three runs against Marsh came in the fourth inning, when he allowed three straight hits to open the frame before yielding a two-out, two-RBI single to Leody Taveras. After posting a 4-2 record and a 3.24 ERA across his first nine starts, Marsh has put up a 6.66 ERA with a 1-3 record in June. He'll look to close out the month on a high note during a projected start against the Guardians next weekend.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Strikes out season-high eight

Marsh (5-3) got the win vs the Mariners on Saturday. He went five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out eight. Marsh gave up a leadoff homer to J.P. Crawford but would settle in nicely, as he retired the next 13 batters in order. He struck out eight of those 13 hitters, which is a new season high and three away from his career high. Marsh ran into trouble in the fifth and wound up allowing four runs before being pulled, his third straight outing in which he's given up at least four earned runs. His ERA has gone from 2.72 to 4.05 over his last three starts, but he remains a key piece of the Royals' revitalized rotation this season.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Surrenders five runs in loss

Marsh (4-2) took the loss Monday against Minnesota, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out seven. Marsh was done in by two swings of the bat -- a Jose Miranda two-run homer in the third and a Trevor Larnach three-run blast in the fifth. The Kansas City right-hander has been productive since returning from an elbow injury May 10, firing a 3.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 23.1 innings. Overall, his ERA now sits at 3.24 with a 43:14 K:BB over 50 innings. Marsh is slated to face the Padres at home in his next start.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: May require rehab assignment

Manager Matt Quatraro said Friday that sending Marsh (elbow) on a rehab assignment before returning from the IL "would be a smart thing to do," Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Marsh has been on the injured list since April 25 due to a bruised right elbow. He threw a bullpen session Monday and did so again Friday, though he will likely need to face live hitters before beginning a rehab stint.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: X-rays negative

X-rays on Marsh's right forearm came back negative Wednesday, Joel Goldberg of Bally Sports Kansas City reports. Marsh had to leave Wednesday's contest after taking a comebacker off his forearm in the fifth inning, though he was able to escape the incident with only a bruise. Manager Matt Quatraro said he expects the 25-year-old to be fine, and it seems Marsh still has a good chance to make his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Monday against the Blue Jays.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Exits with injury

Marsh was removed from his start Wednesday versus Toronto after getting hit by a comebacker, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Marsh took a 94-mph line drive off his right forearm during the fifth inning and looked to be in a considerable amount of pain before leaving the game with trainers. The Royals will take a closer look at him and should offer an update on his status after Wednesday's game. The 25-year-old righty pitched 4.1 innings of shutout ball before exiting.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Improves to 2-0

Marsh (2-0) earned the win over the Mets on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out two batters. The Mets got to Marsh for four runs in the first three innings, but he ended his day with a couple scoreless frames, and the Kansas City offense provided more than enough support to power him to the win. Marsh has allowed just one home run through three starts this season -- Pete Alonso's long ball Saturday -- and the right-hander has a serviceable 4.32 ERA and 1.08 WHIP despite having only 10 strikeouts through 16.2 innings. He's firmly in the streaming mix but will make for a tough call next week in a projected home start against the Orioles.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Named fifth starter

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Thursday that Marsh has won the final spot in the rotation, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Jordan Lyles had the incumbency and the contract, but he was hurt and out-pitched by Marsh this spring, so he'll head to the bullpen. Marsh posted a 1.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB over 14 innings during Cactus League play to earn the rotation slot. The 25-year-old has displayed swing-and-miss stuff throughout his pro career, including during his time with Kansas City last season when he fanned 85 over 74.1 frames while splitting time between the rotation and bullpen. Marsh's control is a problem, though, so he'll need to tighten that up before fantasy managers can put a ton of trust in him.
