Player Outlook
Tyler Fitzgerald's overall production was somewhat predicted by his work in the minors the previous two seasons, as he was a 20-20 player in both Double-A and Triple-A in the San Francisco system. He made the club out of camp, but did not see consistent playing time and was even sent back down to Triple-A until just before the All-Star break. He homered in his last start before the break and then proceeded to homer in each of the first four games after the break. That magical week was fun, but Fitzgerald only went on to homer nine more times with a .263/.311/.455 triple-slash line in the second half. The homers and steals were there, but so were the strikeouts, as Fitzgerald has consistently had below-average strikeout rates throughout his professional career. He made his living off hunting for fastballs, hitting .328 (.287 xBA) with nine of his 15 homers coming off fastballs, but his expected batting averages off nonfastballs was near .150 with a 44 percent whiff rate. The Giants signed Willy Adames and are moving Fitzgerald to second base, but there are some concerns given the swing-and-miss in his stroke.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Set for Cactus League debut Friday

Fitzgerald (back) is starting at second base and batting seventh Friday against the Brewers in his Cactus League debut, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Fitzgerald has been brought along slowly after developing a lower-back injury early in camp, but he's been going through full workouts for a few days and is now ready to test things out in game action. The 27-year-old is slated to serve as the Giants' primary second baseman in 2025 following a mini-breakout which saw him post an .831 OPS with 15 homers and 17 steals in 96 games last season.

Fitzgerald (back) has been cleared for full baseball activities and is expected to be ready for Cactus League games by this weekend, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Fitzgerald developed a lower-back injury early on in camp but has been progressing well since then. The 27-year-old will do some hitting and field grounders Monday and should be ready for game action in a few days. He's projected to open the season as the Giants' regular second baseman.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Nearing game action

Fitzgerald's lower-back issue showed improvement Sunday, and he is expected play in Cactus League games before the end of this week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Fitzgerald was held out of workouts for a few days at the start of camp due to the injury, but he's feeling better and is close to making his spring debut. The 27-year-old posted 15 homers and 17 steals with an .831 OPS as a rookie last year and will begin the season as San Francisco's everyday second baseman after Willy Adames was signed in December to take over at shortstop.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Resuming baseball activities

Fitzgerald (back) will resume baseball activities Thursday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Fitzgerald was held out of workouts for a couple days due to a lower-back injury. • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Day-to-day with lower-back issue

Fitzgerald will be held out of workouts for a few days due to a lower-back injury, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. The Giants appear confident that it won't be a lingering problem for Fitzgerald, but at this stage of spring training there's little reason to push him. Fitzgerald slashed .280/.334/.497 with 15 home runs and 17 stolen bases over just 96 games for San Francisco last season and is slated to serve as its everyday second baseman in 2025.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Slotted in at second base

Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Monday that he sees Fitzgerald as the team's regular second baseman next season, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Posey couldn't comment on the Willy Adames signing yet because it's not official, but with Adames aboard Fitzgerald will slide over to the keystone. The position is not foreign to Fitzgerald, who started four games at second base for the Giants in 2024 and 87 during his time in the minors. Fitzgerald had a mini-breakout with San Francisco this season, slashing .280/.334/.497 while hitting 15 homers and stealing 17 bases over 96 games.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Won't be everyday shortstop

Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Tuesday the team will be looking for a shortstop this offseason rather than putting Fitzgerald there on an everyday basis, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Posey referenced Fitzgerald's ability to play multiple positions, perhaps an indication the Giants have the 27-year-old pegged for a super-utility role in 2025. He trailed off in September (.677 OPS), but Fitzgerald still finished with a .280/.334/.497 batting line while hitting 15 homers and stealing 17 bases over 96 games. While his position doesn't appear nailed down yet, Fitzgerald should remain an everyday player for the Giants next season.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Out of San Francisco lineup

Fitzgerald is not in the lineup for Friday's contest in Kansas City, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Still out Saturday

Fitzgerald (back) isn't in the Giants' lineup for Saturday's game against the Padres, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. MRI scans revealed no structural damage in Fitzgerald's back Friday, but he'll need to miss a second consecutive start after departing Thursday's contest with tightness. Brett Wisely will shift to shortstop, opening up second base for Marco Luciano.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Departs with back injury

Fitzgerald exited Thursday's game against Milwaukee due to lower-back tightness, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Fitzgerald left the game in the third inning after going 0-for-1 in his lone plate appearance. The severity of the injury is currently unclear, so he should be considered day-to-day heading into Friday's series opener versus the Padres.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Two doubles in three-hit effort

Fitzgerald went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored in Wednesday's 13-2 win over the Brewers. Fitzgerald has kept his bat warm in September, going 12-for-35 (.343) over nine contests, though he's produced just one RBI this month. The shortstop is now at a .297/.352/.532 slash line with 14 home runs, 17 stolen bases, 31 RBI and 49 runs scored over 83 games. Wednesday was the first time he's hit leadoff versus a right-handed pitcher since Aug. 25 -- he hit between second and seventh for 13 consecutive games. The Giants haven't faced a southpaw since Aug. 21, though that streak of opposing righties is projected to end Sunday if Martin Perez (paternity list) returns as expected for the Padres.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Inserted into lineup

Fitzgerald will start at shortstop and bat fourth Wednesday versus Arizona, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Fitzgerald was originally scheduled to receive a day off Wednesday, but he will now join the starting nine to replace the scratched Matt Chapman. Fitzgerald has recorded a base hit in five of his last six games, going 7-for-23 with an RBI and two runs scored in that span.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Continues to produce

Fitzgerald went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases Thursday in a 6-0 win against Atlanta. Fitzgerald began the Giants' half of the first inning with a single, which he followed with a steal of second and third base. The rookie then added a sacrifice fly in the second frame. Fitzgerald has been an incredible pickup for fantasy managers astute enough to claim him off the waiver wire -- through 61 games, he's slashing .311/.365/.617 with 14 homers, 27 RBI, 37 runs and 14 stolen bases. He isn't showing any signs of slowing down, batting .333 (20-for-60) with five home runs and seven thefts through 14 games in August.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Hammers 11th homer

Fitzgerald went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's 8-2 win over the Reds. Fitzgerald has 10 homers over his last 16 games, including two long balls over three contests in August. He continues to run with the opportunity to be a near-everyday option at shortstop, and it's tough to see him coming out of the lineup often as long as he keeps mashing. For the year, the 26-year-old has a .309/.369/.632 slash line with 11 homers, 23 RBI, 28 runs scored, seven stolen bases, seven doubles and two triples over 50 contests.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Homers in win

Fitzgerald went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBI in Friday's win over the Reds. Fitzgerald knocked an RBI double in the second inning and added an insurance run with a solo blast in the seventh. He was stuck in a small 3-for-20 skid before Friday's big performance. Over the last 14 games, he's gone 19-for-52 (.365) with 13 extra-base knocks, including nine homers. The hot stretch has pushed Fitzgerald's season slash line to .313/.371/.633 through 140 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Two homers in win

Fitzgerald went 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored in Friday's 11-4 win over the Rockies. Fitzgerald continues to put together a stunning surge in the second half. Dating back to July 9, he has at least one extra-base hit (seven homers, two doubles, one triple) in eight straight games. He's up to a .330/.400/.660 slash line with eight long balls, 18 RBI, 24 runs scored and seven stolen bases through 42 contests this year. Fitzgerald's playing time also looks to be more secure after Thairo Estrada (wrist) landed on the injured list Friday. Look for Fitzgerald to handle a starting role at shortstop while Brett Wisely and Casey Schmitt share second base for the time being.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Homers in fifth straight game

Fitzgerald went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and two RBI in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Dodgers. Fitzgerald kept his home run magic going with a solo blast to left in the second inning, and he later drove in a second run in the ninth with a single. He's now homered in five straight games, becoming the first Giants rookie to accomplish such a feat and becoming the first Giant to do it since Barry Bonds homered in seven straight in 2004. Over this stretch, Fitzgerald's slashing .571/.667/1.714 with seven RBI, six runs and a 4:4 BB:K in 18 plate appearances. He should continue to find himself in the lineup while his bat his scorching hot.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Goes deep again

Fitzgerald went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Rockies. Fitzgerald has homered in back-to-back games as he continues to build a case for more playing time. Most importantly, his homer Sunday came off right-hander Ryan Feltner -- Fitzgerald has mostly operated in a short-side platoon role. For the season, the utility man is batting .298 with four homers, seven stolen bases, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored through 92 plate appearances. He continues to be an option primarily in the middle infield whenever Brett Wisely or Thairo Estrada need rest.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Provides late home run

Fitzgerald went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk and two runs scored in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. Fitzgerald's only hit of the night came at a crucial moment after he led off the eighth with a solo blast off Yusei Kikuchi to put the Giants within a run. Fitzgerald then worked a walk in the ninth before eventually scoring the winning run on a wild pitch to walk off the game. Though he's yet to carve out a full-time role, Fitzgerald has done well with his opportunities, slashing .278/.337/.430 with two homers, seven RBI, 14 runs, seven steals and a 6:28 BB:K in 86 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Records steal in loss

Fitzgerald went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Guardians. Fitzgerald was impactful in the fifth inning with a two-run single. He then stole second, and that allowed Matt Chapman to steal home for another run, though the Giants' comeback effort ultimately fell short. Fitzgerald has been good in a limited role with a .276/.329/.395 slash line, one home run, seven steals, six RBI and 12 runs scored over 82 plate appearances. He got the start at first base versus southpaw Logan Allen on Saturday, though LaMonte Wade figures to play there regularly versus right-handers.
