After missing the majority of the 2024 campaign due to a right shoulder injury, Clayton Beeter's 2025 campaign was delayed due impingement syndrome in the same shoulder. The 27-year-old was sidelined for about a month before he was activated from the injured list and optioned to Triple-A, where he continued his transition to a full-time relief role. Beeter was recalled by the Yankees in July, but allowed six earned runs across two appearances (3.2 innings) before he was sent back down. A subsequent trade to Washington gave the right-hander a path to the majors once again, where he flashed impressive stuff out of Nationals' bullpen. Among pitchers who threw a minimum of 200 sliders in 2025, Beeter's produced the best batting average against (.098) and 7th-best whiff rate at 49.1 percent. He struck out 32 across 21.2 innings with the Nats while pitching in high-leverage, but Beeter will need to overcome his poor command and persistent durability issues to reach his fantasy potential.

    Beeter struck out three batters and walked one during his lone inning of work in Tuesday's Grapefruit League win over the Marlins. After being traded from the Bronx to Washington last season, Beeter turned in a 2.49 ERA and 1.02 WHIP to go with a 32:14 K:BB over 21.2 innings. He's followed up his impressive start with the Nats by allowing two runs (both unearned) across three frames in spring training, collecting five strikeouts in the process. The Nationals entered spring camp without a clear go-to choice for ninth-inning work, but the 27-year-old righty seems like a strong contender to open the season as the team's preferred closer based on his recent performance.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Picks up first save

    Beeter earned the save in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Pirates, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three in a scoreless ninth inning. With Cole Henry (back) landing on the IL and Jose Ferrer presumably unavailable, the Nats turned to Beeter in the ninth inning Sunday, and he was able to work out of trouble en route to his first major-league save. Beeter has been excellent recently, holding opponents scoreless in his last 14 appearances (13.2 innings) while allowing just two hits in that span. Overall, the right-hander sports a 4.03 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP and 28 strikeouts through 22.1 innings this season.

    The Nationals will recall Beeter from Triple-A Rochester, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports. Acquired from the Yankees in the Amed Rosario trade, Beeter has had an uneven 2025 season. He's been rocked for six runs with a 1:4 K:BB over 3.2 innings at the big-league level and held a 3.70 ERA and 40:20 K:BB over 24.1 frames during his time at Triple-A. The Nationals have a lot of uncertainty in their bullpen right now, so Beeter could work his way into a high-leverage role if he's able to throw enough strikes.

Beeter got into just two games with the Yankees this season, allowing six earned runs on five hits with a 1:4 K:BB over 3.2 innings. He was better with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 3.54 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 33:16 K:BB over 20.1 frames spanning 18 appearances. Beeter has impressed in Grapefruit League play this spring, posting a 2.00 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB over nine innings across three outings, including two starts. In the right-hander's most recent appearance, he recorded four scoreless frames with four strikeouts against Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Cole has already undergone an MRI and is slated for additional testing on his pitching elbow, and manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Monday that the ace is unlikely to be ready for the start of the campaign, per Erik Boland of Newsday. Along with Beeter, fellow youngsters Will Warren and Luis Gil are candidates to fill in for Cole if he does indeed need to miss time, although Warren isn't on the 40-man roster.

Beeter has premium stuff but profiles better as a power reliever than as a starter. He has made 18 appearances this year at Double-A and has not gone more than four innings in any one outing, averaging under three innings per appearance (51.2 total innings). The 23-year-old righty has a 5.75 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 36.1 K% and 14.3 BB%. Even with his excellent fastball/curveball combination, he will need to cut down on the walks to be trusted with high-leverage work on a team as flush with bullpen talent as the Yankees.
