Player Outlook
It's all about the bat with Gavin Fien, who has a strong combination of hitting and power potential with a plus arm. The Rangers selected the physical 6-foot-3, 200 pound prep shortstop from California with the 12th overall pick and he played 10 games at Single-A after signing. Fien hits from the right side and possesses plus raw power. There have been conflicting reports since before the draft about how fast Fien is, but at best, he's an above-average runner now who figures to slow down. Most evaluators expect him to move to third base, where his size and offensive potential profile nicely. Fien could develop into a middle-of-the-order run producer in four or five years, and he'll be a better athlete than the typical corner slugger.

  • Nationals' Gavin Fien: Traded to Nationals

The Rangers traded Fien to the Nationals on Thursday alongside Alejandro Rosario (elbow), Abimelec Ortiz, Devin Fitz-Gerald (shoulder) and Yeremy Cabrera in exchange for MacKenzie Gore, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. After being selected 12th overall in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft, Fien reported to the Rangers' Single-A affiliate and slashed .220/.267/.341 with seven RBI and four runs scored across 45 plate appearances. He's highly regarded for his hitting, power and arm, though it will likely be a few years before the 18-year-old infielder makes his MLB debut.
