  • Tigers' Andrew Sears: Hit hard in MLB debut

Sears (0-1) took the loss against the Royals on Sunday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk in four innings. He struck out three.

Sears, who worked in bulk relief for his major-league debut, didn't leave an encouraging first impression Sunday. The left-hander was the third pitcher to enter the game for the Tigers and threw just 45 of his 74 pitches for strikes, surrendering three extra-base hits on the afternoon and four of his five runs in the fifth inning. Manager A.J. Hinch said Sunday that Sears will get an extended look for the rest of the season, per Jackson Stone of MLB.com, but whether he'll serve as a starter or long reliever will be contingent upon Detroit's bullpen usage.

  • Tigers' Andrew Sears: Promotion official

The Tigers selected Sears' contract from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.

The left-hander is set to make his MLB debut Sunday in Kansas City, as he's scheduled to work in bulk relief behind opener Jacob Waguespack. Sears posted a 2.57 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 35:11 K:BB across 35 innings for Double-A Erie before being promoted to Triple-A in early August. He excelled in his two outings for Toledo, striking out 14 in 9.2 scoreless frames.

  • Tigers' Andrew Sears: Making MLB debut Sunday

Sears will be called up from Triple-A Toledo and will pitch in bulk relief behind opener Jacob Waguespack during Sunday's game against the Royals, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

The 23-year-old has worked across four minor-league levels this season and has posted a 2.16 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB across 58.1 innings. Sears saw the bulk of his action at the Double-A level but covered 9.2 scoreless frames in his two outings for Toledo after being promoted in early August.

  • Tigers' Andrew Sears: Activated, assigned to High-A

Double-A Erie reinstated Sears (elbow) from its 7-day injured list Sunday and assigned him to High-A West Michigan.

While working his way back from a left elbow osteophyte fracture, Sears had resided on Erie's IL all season before being cleared to begin a rehab assignment in mid-May. Over five starts between the rookie-level Florida Complex League and West Michigan, Sears compiled a 2.63 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB in 13.2 innings. He'll get some more time to knock off rust and build up his pitch count in the Midwest League before likely joining the Erie rotation at some point later this summer.

  • Tigers' Andrew Sears: Recovering from elbow injury

Sears is recovering from a left elbow osteophyte fracture and is in a throwing program, Sam Dykstra of MLB Pipeline reports.

Sears enjoyed a breakout 2025 season, logging a 3.49 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 123 strikeouts in 111 innings across High-A and Double-A. He only made six starts at Double-A last year, and it's unclear how lengthy Sears' recovery will be.
