Hernandez (elbow) opted out of his minor-league contract with the Orioles on Monday and became a free agent, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
After joining the Orioles for camp as a non-roster invitee, Hernandez appeared to be tracking toward a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but an elbow injury suffered two weeks ago scuttled those plans. Though Hernandez has since resumed throwing off a mound, he apparently wasn't interested in sticking around at the Orioles' alternate training site to complete his rehab program. Once healthy, Hernandez could look to rejoin the Orioles if no better offers emerge for the 2010 American League Cy Young winner.

Hernandez's sore right elbow responded well to Wednesday's throwing session, so he'll get back on the mound again with the hope of gaining clearance to face live hitters before camp closes. The right-hander doesn't look like he'll have enough time to guarantee his availability for Opening Day, but he could still be a candidate to eat innings as an opener or primary pitcher when Baltimore first requires a fourth or fifth starter on April 5 and 6, respectively. The Orioles have thus far named only three pitchers to the five-man rotation (John Means, Matt Harvey and Bruce Zimmermann).

Hernandez has been slowed recently due to elbow discomfort, but he advanced to playing catch early in the week and was able to throw off a mound Wednesday. Manager Brandon Hyde was encouraged by Hernandez's successful throwing session. He'll play catch Friday and be evaluated afterward, but Hyde isn't yet sure when Hernandez will be able to return to game action.

Hernandez left his start Tuesday against the Rays with elbow discomfort, though the issue wasn't considered serious enough for him to need an MRI. With less than two weeks remaining until the start of the regular season, however, the skipped start will likely be enough to rule him out for Opening Day.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Hernandez doesn't plan to schedule an MRI after exiting Tuesday's start against the Rays with right elbow discomfort, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Baltimore hasn't updated Hernandez's original diagnosis from Tuesday, so the right-hander looks to have avoided structural damage or a severe strain of the elbow that would normal warrant further examination. Hyde said that Hernandez received treatment Wednesday, so the veteran looks like he may just get some rest for the next few days before the Orioles determine whether he's fit to resume his throwing program. Hernandez still looks unlikely to be ready for Opening Day.
