LeBron James won his third Finals MVP on Sunday night after the Cavaliers' 93-89 victory over the Golden State Warriors, capping a 3-1 comeback against the first team to win 73 games in NBA history. He averaged 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 8.9 assists, 2.6 steals and 2.3 blocks in the Finals.
He led all players in each of the five statistical categories.
It caps an absolutely incredible run in which the Cavaliers defied odds and history and improves James' record in the Finals to 3-4, putting him among some of the all-time greats with three titles. In winning his third Finals MVP, James surpassed Larry Bird and Kobe Bryant and joined Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan with three awards, and trails only Michael Jordan in that department.
Of note, Jordan at age 31 had three titles and three Finals MVPs. James, 31, has those same numbers.
In the final three games of the series, all Cleveland wins, LeBron James averaged 36.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, 9.7 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks while shooting 50.6 percent overall, 42.1 percent from 3-point range. He finished with an unstoppable flurry, and in the fourth quarter of Game 7, James scored 11 of the Cavaliers' 18 points, and made one of the most incredible blocks in Finals history.
James cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats Sunday night. The Finals MVP Award is just another in a long line of accolades waiting for him after this, his sweetest title.
