The Dallas Mavericks have acquired Greg Smith from the Chicago Bulls, the team announced on Monday. Late last season, the Houston Rockets waived Smith and Chicago signed him through the end of the 2014-2015.
At a salary less than $1 million, the Mavericks have themselves a bargain big man as long as he recovers fully after having arthroscopic knee surgery in February. Smith only played 11 games last season, partially because of the Houston Rockets' frontcourt depth and partially because of knee issues, but he shot 64 percent from the field.
While not a great rim protector, he has enormous hands and is an excellent rebounder and finisher around the basket. Dallas generally gets good production out of guys like Smith, but the fact that Brandan Wright and DeJuan Blair are already on the roster means that he is once again stuck in a logjam.
The Bulls were just trying to clear cap room with the move, but they will receive the rights to Tadija Dragicevic because you can't officially trade a player for nothing.
