Restricted free agent Greivis Vasquez has agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract to stay with the Toronto Raptors, as first reported by Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski and confirmed to CBSSports.com's Ken Berger.
It was reported late last week by Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun that the two sides were close to a deal. The Milwaukee Bucks were also reportedly interested in going after Vasquez, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.
Vasquez had a strong finish to the season in Toronto. As well as the creative passing and playmaking you'd expect from him, he made 45 percent of his 3-point attempts after the All-Star break and played a major role in the playoffs against the Brooklyn Nets.
Acquired from the Sacramento Kings along with Patrick Patterson, Chuck Hayes and John Salmons in the December trade that sent away Rudy Gay, Vasquez provided solid backup point guard production behind Kyle Lowry. The per-season salary might seem a bit much for a reserve, but the fact that it's only two years means it's not untradeable and not a problem.
Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri has also reached agreements with Lowry and Patterson, so he's elected to essentially bring the whole band back. This should make Vasquez very happy.
"I’ll say this in a very humble way," Vasquez said at his end-of-season media availability in May. "If we keep this team together, we can be the OKC in the East. And that’s a big statement. But we’re that good, as a team, as a unit. We probably won’t have super All-Stars, but we have guys that can get the job done. And we play great together, that’s the biggest thing. It’s a great chemistry, it’s a healthy locker room, which is more important."
If there's one thing, Vasquez has always been, it's confident.
