If you're a New York Knicks fan and still think there was a chance your favorite team would sign Marc Gasol, I don't know what to tell you. All the way back in December, there was a report that the Knicks didn't think they could make it happen. In March, Gasol reportedly had ruled them out. In May, Memphis Grizzlies guard Beno Udrih flatly stated, "They're not going to get him." And now, with free agency looming, the New York Post's Fred Kerber reports that -- guess what -- the team isn't optimistic.
Then there is Gasol, the wondrous two-way Grizzlies backbone who, pretty much through rumor and hope, has been linked to the Knicks. League sources, however, maintain the Knicks long ago gave up any hope of securing his services.
Gasol reportedly has "no interest" in signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, either, so it seems like the San Antonio Spurs are the Grizzlies' biggest competitor here. CBSSports.com's Ken Berger reported that Gasol "is widely expected to stay," though these things can change extremely quickly.
As for New York, it can still turn to several other big men on the market. DeAndre Jordan and Greg Monroe both reportedly have meetings scheduled, and the team will likely pursue LaMarcus Aldridge. It is unclear how realistic it is that one of these big names will want to join Phil Jackson's rebuilding project, however.
