Wesley Johnson has signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN's Chris Broussard.
The small forward averaged 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in 28.4 minutes per game last year, his first with the team. He made a career-high 37 percent of his three-point attempts.
Johnson, ideally, is a 3-and-D wing player. Under Mike D'Antoni, he at least had the first part down. While long and athletic, the 27-year-old has yet to be consistent enough at either end of the floor to earn more than this type of contract. What he did do in 2013-2014 was show the organization he was worth a shot for another year without sacrificing any future financial flexibility.
The Lakers still don't have a coach or a system, so it's hard to evaluate how Johnson will fit. Los Angeles reportedly reached the same exact agreement with another wing player, Xavier Henry, on Friday. It has also retained Nick Young on a four-year, $21.5 million deal. Johnson could potentially play some stretch-four, but Los Angeles might also bring back Ryan Kelly and it has an abundance of power forwards already with the signings of Carlos Boozer, Ed Davis and Jordan Hill. It's just a confusing roster right now.
