Qualifier: It's just preseason. Rebuttal: It's still fun.
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's take a look at the scoring binge Dallas Mavericks guard Seth Curry, brother of back-to-back MVP Stephen Curry, put on the Charlotte Hornets Monday night in their first preseason game. Curry went for 17 points in the third quarter -- and finished with 20 points overall -- as the Mavs won 95-88. He shot 7-of-13 from the field and a Curry family-like 5-of-6 from 3-point range off the bench for Dallas.
As you can see in the video, Curry looks a lot like his brother shooting the ball, coming off screens, and lighting up the competition -- just in a shooting guard instead of point guard form.
Curry signed a two-year, $6 million deal with Dallas this summer after reviving his career in Sacramento last season. In his first two seasons in the NBA, Curry played for Memphis, Cleveland and Phoenix. He totaled just four games and 21 minutes in those two seasons. With the Kings last year, he played 44 games and 15.7 minutes per game. He shot 45 percent on 111 3-point attempts for George Karl and averaged 6.8 points.
With the money given out this summer, $3 million per season seems like stealing if Curry can provide Dallas with a consistent deep threat off the bench. Rick Carlisle is someone who knows how to maximize spacing with shooters, and that gives Dirk Nowitzki even more room to operate out there. After the game, Carlisle praised Curry for his play so far since training camp started. Via the Star-Telegram:
"He can get it going quick,'' said coach Rick Carlisle, after Curry went 3-for-3 from downtown in the third quarter. "I love his aggression and he is showing that he can play both guard positions, so there are a lot of positives.
"He's making a stronger stand defensively and I think he is going to keep getting stronger as he gets stronger in the weight room and develops a feel for our system.'
If Curry can approach anything like this in the regular season, he'll be in position to make a lot more money during the next contract.
