Wizards' John Butler: Inks pact with Washington
The Wizards signed Butler to an Exhibit 10 contract Sunday.
Butler will join the club on a non-guaranteed deal, though he will likely end up with the club's G League affiliate -- the Capital City Go-Go -- for a second consecutive year. The 21-year-old hasn't played in an NBA game since the 2022-23 season with Portland, during which he averaged 2.4 points while shooting 32.1 percent from the field across 11.6 minutes per game in 19 regular-season appearances. Butler spent last season with the Go-Go, averaging 6.7 points and 3.4 rebounds across 19.5 minutes per game in 33 regular-season outings.

Wizards' John Butler: Gets two-way deal with Washington
Butler agreed to a two-way contract with the Wizards on Monday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
After getting cut loose by Portland following the conclusion of the preseason, Butler quickly caught on with another organization on a two-way pact. The seven-foot, 190-pound Butler was a two-way player with the Trail Blazers throughout the 2022-23 campaign, but he appeared in just 19 games at the NBA level, averaging 2.4 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in 11.6 minutes per contest. The 20-year-old isn't projected to open the season as a member of Washington's rotation, but he should have a better chance at carving out a role in a Wizards frontcourt that's lacking in quality depth behind frontcourt starters Kyle Kuzma and Daniel Gafford.

John Butler: Let go by Portland
Butler was waived by the Trail Blazers on Friday, Sean Highkin of RoseGardenReport.com reports.
Butler was waived in order to make room for Justin Minaya's two-way roster spot. Butler made 19 NBA appearances last season but will likely spend the 2023-24 campaign with the Trail Blazers' G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix.

Trail Blazers' John Butler: Remains in Portland on two-way deal
Butler agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with Portland on Wednesday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports.
Butler appeared in 19 games for the Trail Blazers last season as a two-way player and averaged 2.4 points across 11.6 minutes. However, with the departure of Drew Eubanks, Butler could be in line for a larger role at the center position behind Jusuf Nurkic, especially in light of the fact that Portland is transitioning to a youth movement across the board.

Butler ended Thursday's 129-127 loss to San Antonio with 12 points (4-11 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals across 37 minutes.
Butler drew his first career start Thursday and was excellent defensively, posting multiple tallies in each defensive category. With the Trail Blazers essentially shutting down a majority of its regulars, Butler has seen an increased role over the past six games, averaging 5.5 points in 23.2 minutes, but the undrafted rookie out of Florida State has picked up his production over his past two appearances, posting 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in 31.0 minutes during those contests.

Butler will move into the starting lineup for Thursday's game in San Antonio.
Shaedon Sharpe (knee) is out, so Butler will replace him in the first unit and will be joined by Skylar Mays, Jeenathan Williams, Trendon Watford and Drew Eubanks. Butler made it onto the court for just the fifth time all season, an impressive feat in itself. He was unable to put the ball in the basket, leaving his career total at just two points.
