For Aldon Smith, the 2012 offseason is something he -- and the 49ers -- would just as soon move past.
It started with a DUI arrest in Miami Beach in January and was followed by an incident where he suffered minor stab wounds while hosting a party at his home just outside San Jose on June 30.
A remorseful Smith addressed the media for the first time since either incident before the team's first official practice of training camp Friday.
"Letting everybody down was probably the saddest part, but I’m back to 100 percent and I’m ready to go," he said. "I felt like I let the fans and everybody that kind of looked to me like that down."
Smith's wounds required staples but are not expected to affect his play moving forward. He passed the team physical, according to coach Jim Harbaugh.
Predictably, Harbaugh remained mum on the incident.
“I’ve talked to Aldon and that conversation is private,” Harbaugh said. “Aldon doesn’t need to re-read the same exact thing that I told him quoted in your newspaper.”
Smith, who finished second the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting last year after setting the team rookie record with 13 sacks, is expected to make a push to become an every-down OLB this year. As a rookie, he played behind Parys Haralson and entered the game in passing situations.
