If you’re wondering what the heck is going on with Bengals right tackle Andre Smith, you’re probably not alone.
After skipping voluntary offseason workouts and then mandatory mini-camp, Smith arrived at training camp Wednesday, but the team announced it was putting him on the Non-Football Injury list. He still counts against the 90-man roster, but he can be taken off the list at any time in order to practice.
As the Cincinnati Enquirer points out, this is the fourth time in five seasons that Smith won’t be practicing on the first day of training camp.
Considering Smith signed a three-year, $18 million contract in the offseason -- most likely, a contract that was priced too low in his estimation -- this is not good news for the team.
Coach Marvin Lewis said in the offseason that Smith was dealing with a personal issue that was unrelated to his January arrest for allegedly bringing a gun into the Atlanta airport.
