The Cardiac Bears strike again, erasing an 18-point deficit to shock the Packers in the wild card round

The Green Bay Packers cruised to a 21–3 halftime lead, but the game flipped in the second half as the Chicago Bears rallied all the way back to win 31–27 in the NFC wild card round.

The comeback marked the largest in Bears' playoff history and the largest blown lead in Packers' playoff history. Chicago's win Saturday night at Soldier Field was the team's first playoff victory since the 2010 divisional round against the Seattle Seahawks, snapping what had been tied for the third-longest active playoff win drought in the NFL.

Green Bay silenced Soldier Field early, with quarterback Jordan Love throwing touchdowns on the Packers' first three drives — a 7-yard pass to wide receiver Christian Watson, an 18-yard strike to wide receiver Jayden Reed and a 1-yard toss to wide receiver Romeo Doubs. Love's third touchdown of the opening half was set up by the Bears turning the ball over on downs at their own 32.

For as hot as the Packers were in the first half, they went ice-cold in the second. Green Bay punted on its first four drives after halftime, allowing the Bears to close within 21–16 with 10:08 left after two field goals and a 6-yard touchdown run by running back D'Andre Swift. Love briefly answered, connecting with first-round rookie wideout Matthew Golden on a screen pass that Golden turned into a 23-yard touchdown -- the first of his career -- to put Green Bay back up 27–16 with 6:36 remaining.

The Bears then ripped off 15 straight points, starting with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Williams to Olamide Zaccheaus, followed by a two-point conversion to tight end Colston Loveland. Wide receiver DJ Moore later broke free for the go-ahead 25-yard touchdown. Moore also caught the go-ahead touchdown against Green Bay in Week 16.

Love and the Packers reached the Bears' 28-yard line after getting the ball back with 1:43 left, but Green Bay came up empty after a pair of late heaves fell incomplete.

Here are three takeaways from one of the wildest playoff games in recent memory.

Matt LaFleur's seat just heated up

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and the Packers were set to meet in the near future to discuss a contract extension, per NFL Media, with 2026 the final year of his current deal. Leading Green Bay into the worst playoff collapse in franchise history -- against enemy No. 1, the Chicago Bears -- could complicate those talks.

LaFleur's 76 regular-season wins in seven years are tied for the second-most by a head coach in his first seven seasons in NFL history, along with Hall of Famer Paul Brown. That stands in stark contrast to his now 3–6 postseason record. The Packers reached the NFC Championship Game in his first two seasons in 2019 and 2020, but they have gone 1–4 in their last five playoff games over the past four seasons.

Caleb Williams, Ben Johnson are who Bears fans hoped they would be

After Williams struggled through the first three quarters (14 of 27 passing for 177 yards and two interceptions), he flipped a switch and powered the Bears to their largest playoff comeback ever. He completed just 10 of his 21 throws in the fourth quarter, but they went for 184 yards and two touchdowns. His 361 passing yards are the second-most in a victory by a quarterback making his playoff debut in NFL history.

Johnson became the first head coach in Bears history to win a playoff game in his first season. He led Chicago to an NFC North title, the epic wild-card win over the hated Packers, and now the Bears will host another postseason game in the divisional round. Not a bad start at all.

The Packers badly missed Micah Parsons

Green Bay recorded an NFL-low three sacks over the final four games of the regular season after All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons went down with a torn ACL in Week 15 at Denver. On Saturday night, the Packers produced just one sack, from edge rusher Lukas Van Ness, despite leading by three scores at halftime -- a game script that put Caleb Williams in passing situations for much of the second half.

Pro Bowl edge rusher Rashan Gary totaled 7.5 sacks in 2025, but none came after the Packers' 35–25 Week 8 win over the Steelers. Green Bay can clear just under $11 million in cap space in 2026 by releasing him.

Cardiac Bears strike again, complete seventh fourth-quarter comeback of the season

FINAL: Bears 31, Packers 27

Chicago had the most comeback wins -- six to be exact -- of any NFL team in the 2025 regular season.

The Bears carried that identity into the playoffs, trailing 21-6 entering the fourth quarter before erupting for 25 points in the final frame to once again shock their division rival.

The Packers had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but Jordan Love's final pass fell incomplete.

The Bears miraculously advance to the divisional round, where they'll either play the Rams or the Eagles.

BEARS LEAD

Late 4Q: Bears 31, Packers 27

Chicago now leads with 1:43 left to play after Caleb Williams' 25-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open DJ Moore from 25 yards out. The Bears erased an 18-point halftime deficit, 21-3, to take a four-point lead. The Packers punted on their first four drives of the second half, scored a touchdown (and missed an extra point) and missed a field goal in the second half.

Packers miss FG!

Late 4Q: Packers 27, Bears 24

Brandon McManus has now cost his team seven points tonight after missing a 44-yard field goal, his second of the game. (He also missed an extra point.)

The Bears have the ball back with 2:51 left to play down by three points. With the way the Packers' defense has played in the second half, anything could happen here.

What a time for Matthew Golden to score his first NFL TD!

Mid 4Q: Packers 27, Bears 16

Matthew Golden caught a screen pass for Jordan Love, and after a broken tackle, he ran away from the Bears' defense for a 23-yard receiving touchdown. Golden, a rookie first-round pick, didn't score a touchdown in the regular season, but he picked an ideal time to score for the first time in the playoffs.

The Packers pushed their lead back out to 11 (27-16) with 6:36 left to play. Brandon McManus missed the extra point.

Packers dodge disaster on throw to OT Darian Kinnard

With Green Bay suiting up just a couple tight ends, the Packers lined up offensive tackle Darian Kinnard as eligible to catch a pass. Kinnard caught the football and rumbled ahead for six yards, but then he fumbled the football. However, Green Bay dodged a bullet as the football ricocheted out of bounds of a Bears defender.

Packers force Caleb Williams into red zone interception

Late 3Q: Packers 21, Bears 6

Defensive tackle Karl Brooks blew through the middle of Chicago's offensive line to apply pressure on Caleb Williams on fourth-and-1 from the Packers 6-yard line. That resulted in Williams tossing an interception to backup linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper. Hopper, a 2024 third-round pick, was on the field in place of the injured Edgerrin Cooper. The Packers lead 21-6 at their own 9 with 3:11 left in the third quarter.

Packers rolling after Jordan Love's third TD

Late 2Q: Packers 21, Bears 3

Green Bay capitalized fully on the Bears' turnover on downs at its own 32-yard line with Jordan Love hitting Romeo Doubs on an out route to the front-left corner of the end zone for a one-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal. That put the Packers up 21-3 with 1:56 left to play in the half.

Love has completed 9 of his 12 throws for 139 yards and three passing touchdowns on three drives.

Bears roll dice (again) -- fail (again)

Late 2Q: Packers 14, Bears 3

Chicago shockingly went for it on fourth-and-4 from their own 32-yard line, and it failed. Caleb Williams' throw to wide receiver Luther Burden was deflected at the line of scrimmage, which caused the pass to flutter to the ground as an incompletion for a turnover on downs.

Two drives, two passing TDs for Jordan Love

Mid 2Q: Packers 14, Bears 3

Despite starting the first two drives at the 15-yard line and the 13-yard line, the Packers scored touchdowns on both possessions thanks to passes from Jordan Love.

This time, Love hit wide receiver Jayden Reed up the left sideline after Reed beat linebacker Tremaine Edmunds in coverage on third-and-9 for an 18-yard touchdown. The Packers lead 14-3 with 6:46 left in the first half.

Love is rolling: he's completed seven of his nine throws for 116 yards and two touchdowns thus far.

Caleb Williams throws fourth-down INT

Early 2Q: Packers 7, Bears 3

Bears head coach Ben Johnson clearly doesn't trust his defense to slow down Packers quarterback Jordan Love and the Green Bay offense.

Chicago went for it twice on fourth down on its second drive, and the second try failed in grand fashion. Quarterback Caleb Williams went deep, and the only player in the area was cornerback Carrington Valentine, who intercepted the football.

However, it would have been to Green Bay's benefit for Valentine to let the ball fall incomplete. The interception forced Green Bay to start its next drive at the 13-yard line instead of the 40.

The Packers lead 7-3 with 11:04 left in the first half.

Bears' man coverage playing right into Jordan Love's strengths

As noted by CBS Sports NFL analyst JP Acosta, Packers quarterback Jordan Love leads the NFL with a 0.43 expected points added (EPA) per play against man coverage this season (min. 100 attempts), per Sumer Sports.

The Bears ran man coverage on 29% of their defensive plays in 2025, the eighth-highest rate in the NFL.

Love is off to a good start early with 52 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Christian Watson, with completions on four of his first five throws.

Packers respond with opening-drive TD

Late 1Q: Packers 7, Bears 3

Love rolled out for an easy pitch-and-catch with top wide receiver Christian Watson for a seven-yard touchdown on a play-action pass.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur called a balanced drive with five passes and four runs on Green Bay's nine-play, 85-yard scoring possession. Bears safety Jaquan Brisker walked off on his own with an injury at the end of the play.

The Packers lead 7-3 with 2:06 left in the first quarter.

Packers defense bends but doesn't break

Mid 1Q: Bears 3, Packers 0

Chicago converted its first four third downs, but Green Bay's defense forced two incompletions on the Bears' final series. Chicago connected on a 27-yard field to take an early 3-0 with 7:02 left in the first quarter. Quarterback Jordan Love and the Packers' offense will take the field for the first time tonight coming up next.

Packers look to overcome rash of injuries

The Packers have lost a number of key contributors throughout the season, but they will get quarterback Jordan Love (concussion in Week 16 at Bears) and running back Josh Jacobs (limited snaps since missing Week 12 with a knee injury) after a week of rest in Week 18.

Green Bay will be without right tackle Zach Tom (knee/back injury in Week 15), tight end Tucker Kraft (tore ACL in Week 9, center Elgton Jenkins (broken ankle in Week 10, defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt (fractured ankle in Week 13) and edge rusher Micah Parsons (tore ACL in Week 15).
