Bills WR Donald Jones has been dealing with a calf injury in recent weeks -- but that’s not the reason he was placed on injured reserve.

Jones landed on IR Tuesday, and coach Chan Gailey said Wednesday that Jones’ most recent setback was not related to his previous injury. Jones was officially given the Non-Football/Illness designation.

Gailey declined to comment on the exact nature of the ailment.

“He’s got an illness and if he wants to talk to you about it then I’ll let him talk to you about it,” Gailey said. “I don’t talk about things that aren’t football related, and this one is not football related.”

Jones has had kidney-related issues in the past. He told CBSSports.com last year that he fell in the 2010 draft in part due to a kidney disorder; several teams told him that he was taken off their draft boards because of the condition. It's not known if his current illness is related.

Jones, Buffalo’s No. 2 WR, finished with career-highs in all major receiving categories -- receptions (41), yards (443) and touchdowns (4).

Wood hopeful for Sunday: C Eric Wood, the emotional and physical leader of Buffalo’s offensive line, is hoping to make a return for Buffalo’s final two games of the season. Wood has missed the last two games with a partial MCL tear in his left knee. He returned to practice on a limited basis on Wednesday. “The plan is to play,” Wood said. “I’m going to test it out today and tomorrow so I’ll know after that. I want to come back this week and give us a little spark up front and see if I can help our offense get back on track.” Wood made it clear to the men upstairs that he didn’t want to end a third season on injured reserve. “I told [GM] Buddy [Nix] that immediately,” Wood said.

Gailey said that Wood's resistance to being placed on IR didn't surprise him. “He’s a competitor, a great competitor. He’s a fighter, and it doesn’t shock me at all that he wants to get back and try to help us finish this thing strong.”

Progress in lease talks: Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz told the Buffalo News Wednesday that “significant talks” took place Tuesday night regarding the team’s stadium lease. The county, state and Bills are involved in the discussions, which are viewed as vital for the team’s long-term future in Buffalo. Buffalo’s current lease expires in July. “It’s a complicated deal. I like the position we’re in, but we’re not there yet,’‘Poloncarz told The News.

Carrington receives credit for another block: Backup DT Alex Carrington has found quite the niche for himself on special teams. Carrington was given credit Wednesday for his blocked extra point in Sunday’s loss to Seattle, which gives him three blocked kicks on the season. He’s the first Bill since Bruce Smith in 1996 to block three kicks in a season. DT Marcell Dareus was originally credited with the block against the Seahawks.
